Position Overview Are you an ambitious HR professional seeking an exciting new opportunity to advance your career? Join the University of Minnesota's dynamic human resources team within University Finance as an HR Generalist and cultivate your skills to become an HR Consultant. As the Human Resources Generalist, you will act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders and managers in University Finance, providing guidance on non-routine and complex human resources matters. Additionally, an essential component of this position is to support the development of management by building the ability of leaders to solve routine issues on their own, through a combination of coaching and consultation. The HR Generalist contributes to process improvements for HR services and important initiatives and projects. Reports to and frequently partners with the Human Resources Director on strategic initiatives. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Employee Relations and Performance Management - 40% Partner with the HR Director and management on reclassifications, investigations, discipline, and terminations. Ensure understanding of allegations, appropriate investigation, analysis and documentation, and recommendations for conclusion and course of action. Identify the root cause of complex issues and coach management to design and implement appropriate solutions. Support UFinance HR Director with operational management, accountability, and continuous improvement for core human resource functions including performance management, staffing, job design, and data integrity. Make timely and effective recommendations based on HR best practices and policies. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws, university policies and procedures, and University Finance policies and procedures. Collaborate with UFinance HR Director and the Office of Human Resources (OHR) Employee Relations team to operationalize university-wide strategies. Talent Management - 20% Serve as backup for key HR activities, including payroll processing, internal approval routing, building access management, staff engagement initiatives, student hiring, staff onboarding and I-9 verification, and interview scheduling. Support and advise on Talent management activities including: Retention of critical talent pools and continuity of our leadership and diverse talent pipelines. Consult with hiring managers to clearly understand their short and long-term staffing needs and provide insight into the current labor market. Provide coaching and guidance to leadership around talent management practices. Support hiring managers and leadership with defining and validating position requirements and job descriptions, including education, experience, technical knowledge, competencies, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) aspirations. Human Resources Consultation - 30% Provide consultation to senior leaders and managers on a wide range of human resource-related topics including, but not limited to, performance management, employee relations, employee engagement, learning and development, compensation, and job design. Coach management, building their capabilities to solve people-related issues. Additionally, be as clear and transparent as possible to help managers understand how people's decisions are made. Collaborate with leadership on various projects and initiatives including supporting the University's goal of creating a positive and inclusive campus climate for all by advancing equity and diversity. 10% Other work as assigned Qualifications Ideal candidates demonstrate a desire to advance their knowledge of human resource as a profession. Strong attention to detail, the ability to interact with assertive personalities with tact and diplomacy, organizational aptitude, a well-developed sense of urgency, professional decorum, and an unwavering ability to maintain confidentiality are essential to being successful in this role. Required Qualifications (please document on the resume): BA/BS degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, or other related field and two years of work experience or a combination of related education and/or work experience to equal six years. Understanding of employment laws and regulations, as well as HR policies and procedures Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with employees, managers, and leadership is critical, as well as the ability to write comprehensive reports and recommendations. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills including the ability to gather and analyze data, identify patterns and trends, and develop effective solutions. Ability to be empathetic, diplomatic, and approachable, with the ability to establish trust with employees and managers. Possess a high degree of professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion in all interactions. Excels with attention to detail and organization.
