Apply By:December 6, 2024 ABOUT THIS POSITION We are looking for a dedicated individual to join our team at the University of Minnesota who possesses expertise and hands-on experience working with individuals and communities to understand and prepare for the challenges of climate change. The Climate Adaptation and Resilience Extension Educator will collaborate closely with an Arrowhead Regional Development Commission climate planner, and provide education and technical assistance for regional planning efforts to help communities across Minnesota's Lake Superior coastal region prepare for climate-driven threats like extreme weather events, changing temperature and precipitation, and increased chances for plant disease and pest damage. We are seeking an individual who can connect and engage with the diverse range of community leaders and other community members from the Lake Superior coastal area, and collaborate with a statewide team of MCAP applied research and Extension Educators and faculty to bring in-depth climate change and adaptation science to assist these audiences in understanding and responding to the impacts of a changing climate. This will include serving as a trusted resource and educator capable of translating global, regional, and local climate information to be both useful and used by coastal communities to understand climate-related threats and engaged in developing regional resilience plans and collaboration-building strategies to reduce their climate-related risks and increase community resilience. This position will work closely on a NOAA-funded Regional Resilience planning project with a variety of partners including Saint Louis County, Arrowhead Regional Development Commission, 1854 Treaty Authority, Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, Carlton County, City of Duluth, Cook County, Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Lake County, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Minnesota's Lake Superior Coastal Program, Minnesota Sea Grant, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and others. RESPONSIBILITIES Help Community and Tribal Professionals Use Climate Information to inform the development of a regional resilience plan: Engage with, learn from, and actively assist Lake Superior Coastal Region Tribal, county, and local water and natural resource managers, community leaders, and others in using climate data and information to understand climate-driven threats, and to inform regional plans and collaborative actions to address these threats. Cultivate Climate Understanding: Tailor the design, delivery, and evaluation of the Community Climate Leaders, Climate Adaptation Specialist Training, and other MCAP information and programs to help Lake Superior Coastal Region audiences understand climate and extreme weather thr ats and build skills to use climate information and other knowledge to inform adaptation decision-making and action. Measure Program Effectiveness: Develop and use evaluation strategies to find out what the people we're helping need and to check if our programs and resources are working well. Adapt Programs for Everyone: Design and change programs and resources so they work for people with different levels of knowledge, backgrounds, and cultures. Cultivate Collaboration: Develop and maintain collaboration with project partners, and Tribal and regional community members to inform and support climate action. Contribute to our Long-term Strategy: Work with MCAP and project leadership to refine and update project plans and actions that make communities stronger in the face of climate change. Collaborate with Others: Work together with people in MCAP and the Lake Superior Coastal Region, as well as other regional climate services partners/providers, others across the University and other groups of people who have a stake in this work. Be Part of the University Community: Be an active member of the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership, Extension, and the wider University of Minnesota community. LOCATION OF POSITION Primary office location will be the Extension Regional Office in Cloquet. Hybrid work arrangements may be considered for this position. TRAVEL This person will travel overnight to locations across Minnesota approximately 1-3 nights per month and day trips approximately 1-3 times per month. APPOINTMENT The position has an annual University academic professional appointment as Assistant Extension Educator, Job code 9625ST. The appointment is reviewed for renewal annually, with continuation dependent on performance, results, availability of funding, and program needs. Internal promotion is available. Meeting the promotion policy criteria to achieve promotion is expected. This position currently has funding through September 30, 2028, with a possibility to renew. Reimbursement for travel and subsistence is available in accordance with University policy. Qualifications Candidates must meet all required qualifications and must document them in application materials (cover letter, resume/CV and Diversity Statement). Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a field closely related to climate adaptation science including, but not limited to climate science, climate adaptation science, regional planning, social dimensions of natural resources management, environmental science, natural resource science, or closely related field. Demonstrated experience designing, delivering, and evaluating community or Tribal engagement efforts related to managing threats like extreme weather, exposure to high heat, changes in air quality, and vector-borne diseases. Demonstrated ability to communicate complex scientific information in clear and concise language appropriate for diverse audiences, particularly in Tribal and/or rural communities.
