City Of Minneapolis-Human Resources Chemist Water Bacteriologist I in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Position Description This posting is restricted to current City of Minneapolis employees Perform complex analysis involving chemical, physical and bacteriological analyses to maintain the Minneapolis Public Water supply in accordance with the Minnesota State Health Department regulations and the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act. Work Location: This position currently works on-site only. Job Duties and Responsibilities * Perform chemical, physical and bacteriological analysis of water and other materials to ensure the purity and safety of water. * Research and develop new methods, materials and instruments for water treatment. * Perform quality assurance tests of materials and methods used in the laboratory and water treatment plant. * Perform chemical, physical and bacteriological tests on special samples such as sludge, leaks, liquids or gases. * Prepare chemicals used for various tests and calibrate and monitor testing equipment. * Answer questions and complaints from the public about water treatment and water quality and take corrective action. * Supervise the water treatment process in the absence of the supervisor and plant foreman on weekends and holidays and make treatment changes as required. * Train personnel in proper techniques for water analysis. * Perform duties of lab technicians in their absence and during periods of high workload. * Prepare technical reports for use by various City departments or State and Federal agencies. Working Conditions: Exposure to hazardous and toxic chemicals. Required Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry or equivalent Minimum Experience: Some experience in the field of chemistry in the past ten years if the degree was acquired over ten years ago. Equivalency An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered. Licenses/Certifications: Valid Drivers License Desirable Qualifications -- Language Bilingual skills in Spanish, Somali, Amharic, Oromo, Hmong, Vietnamese and/or Lao. Desirable Qualifications -- Cultural competency Ability to relate and work effectively with people from diverse cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds. Resumes are not required, but strongly recommended. Selection Process The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process. Background Check The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. This list will be ce tified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire one month after it has been established. Interview Selection The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate's education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Knowledge of laboratory principles, techniques, terminology and equipment. * Knowledge of the principles and practices of chemistry and bacteriology. * Working knowledge of Minnesota Health Department regulations and the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act. * Knowledge of instruments for microbiological testing. * Knowledge of water purification problems. * Ability to make accurate analyses and use standard chemical laboratory equipment. * Attendance of acceptable water or wastewater training school or other educational activities every three years to maintain Water Operators certification. * Testing as required by the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act as part of the laboratory certification program. * Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
