Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute Animal Care Handler in Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute has an opportunity for a part-time Animal Care Handler to work 8 - 10 hours per week (or every other week, as available) on Friday and Saturday mornings. Periodic weekends and holidays required. POSITION SUMMARY: Provides daily routine care for laboratory animals. Maintains and arranges for storage of food and supplies. Receives and houses shipments of incoming animals. Assists in the preparation of animals for surgery and other animal handling. Operates animal cage cleaning and sterilizing equipment. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Provide daily routine care for laboratory animals. Clean, wash, and disinfect animal rooms and cages. Feed and care for mice, rats, rabbits, pigs, sheep, hamsters, guinea pigs or other animals. Mix and weigh food formulas and feeds for designated animals. Inspect the physical condition of animals at least daily for signs of illness or injury. Alert proper personnel when illness and injury occurs. Maintain and arrange for storage of food and supplies. Receive and house shipments of incoming animals. Accept deliveries of animals and distribute them to the housing facilities and ensure appropriate identification. Assist in the processing of large animals into the facility. Prepare animals for shipment or transfer to other rooms within the facility. Assist in the preparation of animals for surgery and other animal handling. Operate animal cage cleaning and sterilization equipment. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Education/Experience: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be high school diploma or equivalent, and experience working with animals. Skill, Knowledge & Ability (SKA): Requires interaction with a diverse population. Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication. Must possess a general working knowledge of animal care. Ability to work with and handle a wide variety of animals. Ability to adhere to institutional safety protocols. Ability to carry out work functions with little supervision. Displays high standards of attendance, punctuality, maintains confidentiality, and manages time effectively.
