The School of Continuing Education is the largest provider of professional development in Southeastern Wisconsin providing year-round lifelong learning through varied venues – in our state-of-the-art classrooms in downtown Milwaukee, onsite at business locations, online and other unique locations.
Job Summary
Under general supervision and reporting to the Provost’s Deputy for Continuing Education, the Outreach Program Associate Director for the Small Business Development Center ( SBDC ) provides overall leadership, planning, administrative coordination and evaluation of the SBDC in addition to advising both startup and existing small businesses within the three county (Milwaukee/Washington/Ozaukee) region. Additionally, the Associate Director implements a plan of action for small business activities, conferences and educational opportunities that can bridge UWM and SCE resources with the business community throughout Southeast Wisconsin.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Conduct face-to-face and remote business consulting to individuals and businesses within the region. Ensure follow-up after each consulting session or educational offering to facilitate problem solving and expanding opportunities associated with their business needs.
Provide resources for startup, financing, business planning and marketing to clients.
Use SBDC best practices when working with clients to ensure quality service.
Maintain a regional network of service providers and expert trainers to enhance outcomes for clients.
Provide University resources with the goal of strengthening Southeastern Wisconsin small businesses.
Recruit and train ad hoc consultants and staff. Assign client cases to staff. Process paperwork and counseling notes.
Enter client data and track impact data.
Manage data lists for impact. Share success stories.
Work to meet metrics set by the SBA directed by WI- SBDC to maintain funding.
Provide administrative/operational leadership for SBDC that includes program and service planning, development, and implementation by working with the Outreach Program Managers, SBDC counseling staff, and SBDC support staff.
Collaborate with UWM Sponsored Programs and Accounting to develop and manage the SBDC budget and required supporting documents for submission to SBA . This includes grant management, projecting expenses for ad hoc counselors and staff, SBDC reference/resource materials, professional development, special promotions, and managing program revenue.
Ensure all documentation and policies are compliant with UWM and SBA requirements.
Supervise SBDC staff and ad hoc business counselors (i.e. independent contractors). Complete all paperwork associated with supervision, oversee training, create and distribute assignments, schedule, approve timesheets, and conduct annual performance and supplementary reviews.
Serve as the primary contact to the media relative to UWM SBDC activities.
Develop and implement SBDC marketing strategies including: stakeholder communications, reports, slide presentations, newsletters, website, and brochures.
Serve as primary liaison with the SBDC State Administrative Office.
Prepare and submit in a timely manner all administrative reports required by SBDC Administrative Unit and UW Extended Campus. Respond to inquiries regarding activity, strategic planning and analysis, initiatives, and marketing.
Attend and participate in SBDC meetings and monthly network meetings.
Lead and supervise SBDC Student Staff/Interns.
Coach consulting staff and provide recognition for quality client work.
Work with consulting staff to problem solve for clients.
Monitor consulting client work and recordkeeping to ensure it is meeting WI SBDC standards.
Create a positive and supportive environment to facilitate productive and engaged staff.
Regularly network with internal and external stakeholders to promote the SBDC .
Work with local city and county economic and community development organizations including, but not limited to, local Chambers of Commerce, the Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corp ( WWBIC ), the Wisconsin Business Development ( WBD ), and the Wisconsin Procurement Institute ( WPI ) to leverage resources and create an integrated array of programs and services for business owners and professionals.
Develop relationships with local small business lenders at banks and credit unions to encourage client referrals for assisting with business plans or financial projections as a step towards securing funding.
Representing UWM and SCE SBDC , make public presentations upon request on topics related to small business, SBDC programs/services, and UW entrepreneurship activities.
Attend events within the region to promote services offered by SBDC .
Participate in key economic development and community organizations, serving on committees and teams when appropriate.
This position requires considerable contact with people outside of the University, including business owners, managers and professionals, elected officials, economic development organization leaders and staff, media, and the general public. The ability to travel and perform this function is required.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Accounting, Finance, or Related Field
Six years of progressively responsible professional experience related to business and/or economic development.
Experience must include financial management including developing and managing budgets, grant(s) management, program revenue accounting, and related fund accounting.
Supervisory experience and evidence of commitment to cultural diversity, values, and practices.
Experience with building and maintain relationships with outside individuals and groups, including business owners, managers and professionals, elected officials, economic development organization leaders and staff, media, and the general public.
Proficient in Microsoft Office software and/or other business development software.
Demonstrated high level communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree
Experience as a business manager or owner
Experience working in consulting/marketing and with financial statements
Strong financial background that includes experience with small business financing and local financing options
Knowledge of adult education and consulting techniques and experience
Knowledge of and familiarity with small business assistance programs
Experience working in a multicultural and/or higher education environment
Demonstrated problem solving skills
Target Salary Range $80,000 to $90,000
