Job Description:

Manager, Design Engineering – Advanced Engineering (PPE focused)

The design engineering manager is responsible for leading a team of technical engineers and other subject matter experts in the investigation, design, development and support of upcoming PPE safety products but also hand tools and storage product. The manager will work with internal cross functional engineering teams, as well as external experts, labs, universities, and other partnerships to ensure cohesive technical development. They should be technically inclined with strong leadership skills, and able to provide senior level oversight for core engineering design principles.

The team surrounding and being led by this manager is composed of advanced engineers that are hands-on, technical experts that can see past perceived barriers and use that mentality to uncover new ways of thinking to solve challenging technical hurdles. They are part of a cross-functional team composed of equally motivated Design Researchers, Industrial Designers, and Concept Engineers, and will work to uncover unmet, new design solutions, ideate creative ways to solve technical problems; the role of this manager is to enable them to be the technical experts in the creation and execution of the ideas into concepts.

You'll be DISRUPTIVE through these duties and responsibilities:

  • Directs the R&D Advanced Engineering group to identify and deliver technology solutions to meet customer needs on PPE products

  • Provides strategic and technical leadership to staff assigned to develop new technology solutions across R&D Product Platforms.

  • Communicate effectively with teams and within management structure to facilitate workflow and resolve project barriers and issues.

  • Ability to maintain a professional atmosphere in a fast-paced environment with numerous interactions and interruptions

  • Excellent communications skills with a proven ability to lead a diverse team of jr. level engineers and seasoned engineers to accomplish departmental goals within a high stress complex engineering environment.

  • Management of Complex Decisions: Thrives in ambiguous scenarios in which the correct direction(s) is not yet obvious. Great at gleaning meaning from whatever data is available and making decisions.

  • Coach Design Thinking skills to core team, proper presentation assembly & communication per the various milestone meetings

  • Foster a culture which is a positive, trusted, dedicated, high energy, teaching, learning, and fun community environment

  • Lead multi-functional design reviews; give honest critical assessment and provide objective feedback.

  • Guide material selection and manufacturing methods

  • Reviewing intellectual property and technical publications to identify areas of interest

  • Recruit, develop, and coach R&D team members.

What TOOLS you’ll bring with you:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, or other engineering, math, or science degree

  • 7+ years’ experience in product design or mechanical design with a proven track record of creativity and invention

  • 2+ years leading & managing a team of engineers or similar leadership experience in a technical field

  • Deep mechanical aptitude including a broad knowledge of engineering materials, mechanical properties and an understanding of the manufacturing processes associated with these materials

  • Experience overseeing and evaluating the design of durable consumer products from start to finish. Strong, current knowledge of engineering trends within the discipline.

  • Strong mechanical engineering skills and experience managing mechanical engineering teams.

  • Proven ability to be a leader and motivate teams to be creative, agile, and detail oriented

  • A high degree of autonomy, leadership and proactiveness

  • Ability to work on multiple projects in various stages simultaneously

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to travel up to 5-10% (travel includes Domestic and International)

Other TOOLS we prefer you to have:

  • Experience with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) / Safety products

  • A technical master’s degree or MBA

  • Experience on a Front-End Innovation / R&D Team with a proven track record of creativity and invention in the Consumer Products Market

  • Experience developing new to world test methods to provide deeper understanding of product performance and design trade-offs

  • Firm understanding of mechanical engineering tools including CAD (NX and Solid works preferred), FEA, mold flow analysis, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5)

  • Management of external relationships with university research teams, start-up companies, professional societies & associations, and external testing experts

  • Experience providing engineering teams with materials selection and failure analysis support

  • Experience in a manufacturing facility or pilot plant

  • International experience: traveling to and working with international suppliers, particularly in Asia is a plus
