The Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee seeks applications for an Academic Advisor.

    Job Summary

Academic Advisors in the Peck School of the Arts engage prospective and currently enrolled undergraduate students in decision making on academic matters such as major/minor/certificate choices, course selection and degree requirements. They educate students about and encourage participation in co-curricular experiences such as internships, undergraduate research, and leadership development opportunities.

Advisors maintain appropriate confidentiality, update student advising records, and contribute to the planning and delivery of academic advising related events and programs, such as new student orientation and other student success initiatives. Advisors work to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services to support academic success, and refer students to appropriate university resources. The advising team strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

This position is responsible for:

  • Advising current and prospective Peck School of the Arts undergraduate students on issues related to admission, registration (course selection), and graduation (program requirements)

  • Advising all undergraduate Peck School major curriculum, certificate programs and minors

  • Assisting students in developing strategies to address academic difficulty and refer them to Peck School of the Arts and campus resources, as needed

  • Planning and implementing school/campus initiatives to increase student retention and graduation rates in the Peck School of the Arts

    Minimum Qualifications

  • A completed bachelor’s degree (to be earned by the date of hire)

  • Experience working with high school students, college students, and/or parents related to higher education

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, student development, higher education leadership or a related field (to be earned by the date of hire)

  • Prior college advising experience

  • Strong written skills, including demonstrated ability to take accurate notes in meetings with students and communicate clearly with students and staff

  • Proven ability to multi-task and problem solve in a fast-paced environment

  • Demonstrated experience using electronic databases and/or case management systems such as: Excel, Access, Navigate, and PeopleSoft to effectively collect and utilize data

  • Evidence of ability to relate well to people of all ages and backgrounds

    Target Salary Range $50,000-$55,000
