Summary

Under the supervision of a Sergeant, the Patrol Officer performs a wide variety of diverse professional police work in the preservation of law and order, protection of life and property, prevention of crime, and arrest and prosecution of criminals through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. A Patrol Officer for the City of Midland is expected at all times to diligently follow the Police Department's core values of Integrity, Professionalism and Service to Community.

Job Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Patrols city with special attention to traffic violations, preventing criminal activities, detection of community dangers such as fires, faulty street and traffic lights, downed power lines, poor road conditions or hazards, and failed street signs; investigates and makes detailed reports of accidents and renders aid and assistance; directs pedestrian and vehicular traffic when needed; operates police radio in receiving and responding to calls for service; checks for parking violations and issues parking citations; makes special inspections of buildings and places where people assemble; investigates complaints and makes arrests for violations of laws and ordinances; actively engages in community policing efforts; checks windows and doors of community businesses and investigates suspicious conditions; serves warrants, writs and subpoenas; prepares cases and testimony for court trials; guides and directs residents and the public when required; prepares daily reports and keeps records of arrests and other important incidents; and performs all other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Qualifications -

Experience and Training

Graduation from high school required with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice preferred. Prior law enforcement experience preferred. MUST BE CURRENTLY LICENSED, OR LICENSABLE UPON APPOINTMENT, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE STANDARDS SET BY THE MICHIGAN COMMISSION ON LAW ENFORCEMENT STANDARDS ACT (MCOLES).
