Job Title: Surgical Assistant

Unit: Operating Room

Shift: 7a-3:30p

Facility: Atrium Medical Center

$20,000 sign on bonus available!!!!

The Surgical Assistant (SA) will be responsible for the direct and indirect care of patients based on established standards. The SA will collaborate with the surgeon in performing an operative procedure in a safe manner with optimal outcomes for the patient whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities are potentially compromised. The SA provides assistance to other health care providers such as Registered Nurses, anesthesia staff, surgeons and other professionals. Additionally, the Surgical Assistant provides orient/training to new team members, participates in very complex cases, and actively participates in PI projects. SA works under the license and direct supervision of the surgeon. The SA will be responsible for knowledge and implementation of the mission, vision and values of the hospital. The SA will be responsible for maintaining continuing education.

Essential Duties & Functions:

Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation and wound/incision exposure.

Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of sterile technique, “scrubbing” and sterilization practices.

Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of equipment used in the operating room.

Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of medications used during a surgical procedure.

Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the handling of specimens.

Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of patient care in the operating room (prepping, draping, positioning, moving etc.)

Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of cleaning in surgery (instrumentation, OR rooms etc.)

Assist the surgery team with room turn over and preparation of procedure

Education Required: Diploma Program - Surgical Assistant program must be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA)

Additional requirements:

Area of study or major: Surgical Assistant

Preferred educational qualifications: Associates Degree in the field of Surgical Technology; Military Training; 5 or more years of experience without a degree.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current CPR is required.

Experience Required: No prior job-related work experience

Preferred experience: 2 Years as a surgical tech; 2 years as an SA

Knowledge/Skills:

Must be able to multitask with interruptions while maintaining a professional demeanor

Basic computer knowledge

Strong organizational skills

Effective interpersonal and communication skills
