Responsibilities Medical Lab Technician Performs, evaluates, records and reports clinical laboratory tests used in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of patients on a variety of body fluids and biologic specimens. Recognizes problems and/or potential for problems within the assigned section regarding instruments, computers, and inventories. Displays sound, supportive and independent judgement to resolve issues equitably. Medical Lab Technologist Performs, evaluates, records and reports clinical laboratory tests used in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of patients on a varietynof body fluids and biologic specimens. Recognizes problems and/or potential for problems within the assigned section regarding instruments, computers, and inventories. Displays sound, supportive and independent judgement to resolve issues in the absence of a supervisor. Assumes charge of the laboratory (if charge eligible) as assigned. Qualifications Medical Lab Technician Minimum Education: • Current and active license as a NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technician. Minimum Experience: • Experience preferred but newly NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technician qualified individuals considered. Required Certification/Registration: • ASCP preferred. • NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technician license or eligible required. • If not licensed, NYSED permit required within two months of hire, NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technician license required within one year of permit issuance. • Trainee’s without a Permit may observe, read procedures and learn processes in each section of the laboratory. • They may not under any circumstances verify any testing on patients. • They may be used for specimen processing, send outs and phlebotomy. • Once a Permit has been obtained, candidate may verify tests in areas that competency has been completed. Physical Requirements: • Walking, sitting and standing, most of the day. • Reaches for, lifts and carries light to moderately heavy equipment and supplies. • Visual acuity and color discrimination is required. • Ability to communicate effectively and to comprehend conversation. • Must have manual dexterity and hand-to-eye coordination to handle and manipulate instruments, slides, test tubes and other laboratory equipment capable of working long hours at varied times during the day or night. • Alertness required during all phases. Working Conditions: • Environmental Demands and Exposure to Hazards: Works in a clean, well-lighted, heated or ventilated facility. No routine exposure to hazards. • Physical Demands: Demonstrates physical and functional ability to perform full anatomical range of motion to accomplish tasks. Evidence of visual and aural acuity and finger and hand dexterity to operate computer and office equipment. Can withstand long periods of sitting, standing and/or constant walking. Ability to lift 10 lbs. • Mental Demands: Ability to foster collaborative relationships, to work well under pressure, to organize and synthesize new information, and prioritize tasks. Possesses critical thinking, analytical skills and flexibility. Ability to multi-task. Required detailed attention to work in an environment where interruptions cannot be controlled. May be subject to irregular hours including evenings or potentially weekends to participate in operational and community events as necessary.
