The Supervisor, Medical Billing supervises, orients, trains, and monitors the performance of staff responsible for third party medical collections. This position processes and collects primary care and specialties accounts and ensures department compliance with applicable guidelines and regulations.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

Assists medical collectors with day-to-day collections issues and serves as subject matter expert for department staff and management of the Third Party unit. Reviews various third party reports, distributes them to staff for appropriate collections actions and uses the paperless collection system to process third party insurance accounts. Creates and compiles work files for medical collectors. Advises senior staff of any significant trends in insurance denials in order to identify problems with particular payors. Makes necessary corrections to accounts, updates patient demographic information, and reviews ICD-9 and CPT 4 codes for correctness. Reviews and processes insurance requests for refunds and provides follow up on accounts until they are resolved. Reviews, sorts, and distributes incoming third party correspondence. Makes suggestions on process changes that will improve overall performance. Meets regularly with staff to review productivity reports and assess payer issues. Initiates performance management processes to address on-going performance issues. Approves time off in accordance with UM policies while maintaining adequate staff. Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant specialty or field

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience and/or certifications will be considered.
