The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science invites applications for a full time Research Associate II in the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Science Center, Biology and Life History Branch. The hire may be approved to work remotely.

Department Specific Functions

  • The selected candidate will develop an Apex/Oracle Cloud database that will serve as a repository to receive and hold life history data. The data, derived from ageing of hard-parts and reproductive analysis of gonads collected from reef fishes, coastal pelagic fishes, and highly migratory species, will come from research and production analysis by the Biology & Life History Branch (B&LH) and analogous state or university partners.

  • The incumbent will work with members of B&LH to design and develop a data repository or data warehouse to upload survey, age, and reproductive data from internal and external partners while adhering to the guidelines and standards of NOAA SEFSC IT. Data validation checks will be built-in to the repository; non-compliant data should trigger an automatic email to the data submitter, identifying the errors with a request for correction and resubmission.

  • The RA-II must coordinate work with the SEFSC Operations, Management and Information Division’s (OMI) Information Technology (IT) Branch to ensure compatibility with existing computer systems and databases and adherence to security protocols. Day-to-day coordination with co-workers and advisors will be essential.

  • The position may require travel for workshops or meetings approximately 10-20 days per year. The position is expected to be funded for one year from the official start date.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of relevant work-related experience. Their degree should be in the computer sciences.

  • The RA-II must have experience in designing and developing Oracle databases, preferably with user friendly data upload and download functions.

  • Coursework in fishery or environmental science would be considered desirable in order to better make sense of the data and data relationships used in the project.

  • Experience using the programming language R will be beneficial in working with clients’ data needs.
