The Ocean Science Department at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a full tie Research Associate 1 for the Laboratory for Organic and Stable Isotope Geochemistry.
Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain and operate three mass spectrometry systems: an Agilent gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer, a Thermo gas-chromatograph/elemental analyzer-isotope ratio mass spectrometer, and an Elementar elemental analyzer-isotope ratio mass spectrometer.
Wet chemical preparation of samples for compound-specific isotope analysis, isotope analysis, and data corrections.
Maintain inventories of laboratory consumables and organic sampling and preparation equipment and standardize and initiate purchasing as needed.
Manage and organize sample inventories and instrumental data in electronic databases.
Develop and/or maintain updated written laboratory protocols, instrument operation and lab-specific safety processes, including chemical safety as related to instrument usage.
Train laboratory personnel in lab-specific safety and instrument protocols.
Other duties as assigned.
Education & Requirements
Bachelor's Degree is required in relevant field
At least 1 year hands-on experience with isotope mass spectrometry instrumentation and data handling is preferred.
At least 3 years experience with wet chemistry preparations and safety protocols preferred.
Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
