The University of Miami is currently seeking a Dietic Technician, Registered (DTR) to work at Sylvester Cancer Center in Miami. The incumbent will provide clinical assistance to the Registered Dietician (RD). Under the supervision of a Dietician, the DTR will be responsible for assisting the Dietician with clinical nutrition care for patients, collecting basic nutritionally relevant data to identify patients nutritional risk level and scheduling oncology patients to be seen by dietitians, depending on their nutritional risk. The diet technician will work closely with the Dietitians and interdisciplinary team to ensure that the nutritional needs of our patients are identified and addressed in a timely manner.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Conduct screening of patients to identify those who are at risk for malnutrition or require nutrition interventions based on established protocols.2. Triage patients and determine appropriate level of nutrition intervention needed, such as a registered dietitian (RD) assessment, nutrition education, or follow-up monitoring.3. Schedule and coordinate appointments for patients to see the registered dietitian (RD), as needed.4. Communicate with patients and their families regarding nutrition-related questions and concerns, as well as instructions on preparation for the RD assessment or visit.5. Conduct initial assessments of patients’ nutritional status and provide basic nutrition education and guidance as appropriate.6. Collaborate with dietitians and other healthcare professionals to ensure that patients receive optimal care and support during their cancer journey.7. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care in medical records, including assessments, interventions, and outcomes.8. Participate in quality improvement initiatives to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.This list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties or responsibilities as necessary.

Department Specific Functions• Screens for urgency of a nutritional assessment, care plan, and intervention that is performed by a Registered Dietitian.• Assists Dietitian in collecting nutritionally relevant patient data to perform nutritional screening and preliminary nutritional risk evaluation.• Assists Dietitian in implementing patient nutritional preferences and monitor care plans.• Provides nutrition counseling and education to patients and their families as indicated.• Attend interdisciplinary team meetings, as well as relevant professional development and continuing education opportunities.• Stay up to date on the latest research and best practices in oncology nutrition to provide the highest quality care to our patients.• Completes reports for ongoing productivity tracking as required.• Participates in departmental performance improvement activities and training, contributing to departmental achievements.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:Associate degree or higher in dietetics or a related fieldBoard Certification and State Licensure:Diet Technician, Registered (DTR)

Experience:Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:• Knowledge of medical nutrition therapy, particularly in the oncology setting• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment• Strong computer skills, including proficiency with electronic medical record systems and Microsoft Office• Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care
