U.S. Specialty has an excellent opportunity for a strategic and results-driven Director of Strategic Planning and Communications (“SPC”) leader to serve as a trusted business advisor and “right-hand” to our U.S. Specialty Vice President (“the VP”). Leveraging strong knowledge and insights of the priorities of the eight businesses comprising U.S. Specialty, this role provides critical support to the VP in decision-making, alignment, translating strategy into actionable execution that accelerate organizational goals, change management, and executive communications. Operating at the intersection of business strategy, leadership, and communications, the Director SPC plays a pivotal role in optimizing leadership effectiveness by navigating complex relationships, influencing leaders and other stakeholders without direct authority, fostering collaboration, and driving & measuring organizational success.
Key Responsibilities Include (but not necessarily limited to):
Own U.S. Specialty’s Strategic Planning and Business Operating Rhythms: Develop business planning, agenda-setting, preparation of and facilitation for leadership meetings, and governance to ensure cross-team coordination and strong business performance. Connects the dots and opportunities across U.S. Specialty and the broader enterprise, leveraging this intelligence to drive goal execution. Lead the day-to-day rhythms of tracking goals, meeting minutes and follow-up’s, and roadblock identification while identifying how to bring colleagues and/or teams together to unblock.
Optimize VP Effectiveness: Streamline decision-making, manage VP’s priorities and commitments, and provide strategic counsel to maximize the VP's focus and effectiveness on driving business outcomes. The Director SPC will have a strong pulse of the organization by knowing the most important business drivers across both U.S. Specialty and the broader enterprise at any given time. Providing regular briefings to the VP, the Director SPC will be a strategic air-traffic controller applying strong judgment to identify mission-critical work.
Lead Internal Communications: Build, author, project-plan, and deliver executive communication strategies and activities (e.g., bios, speaking engagements, videos, pan-U.S. Specialty initiatives, etc.) that enhance alignment, reinforce values, foster collaboration, and increase transparency across the organization. Align with other Communicators across the enterprise, modeling All for One AbbVie behaviors. Indirectly lead franchise SPCs’ development, ensuring vertical and horizontal alignment across U.S. Specialty.
Lead Special Projects: Deliver high-stakes, time-bound initiatives to drive organizational results or improve organizational effectiveness that might otherwise fall through the cracks
Lead the Office of the VP, which includes an Associate Director of Communications, an Associate Director of Commercial Capabilities, and an Administrative Assistant
Proactively anticipate and engage with U.S. Specialty leadership and matrix partners in solution-planning for strategy gaps or operational improvements that optimize our business execution
Lead our AbbVocates team in prioritizing organizational initiatives that advance colleague engagement, strengthen high-performing teams, and amplify AbbVie’s culture
Partner with Finance in owning and managing the VP’s budget
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree Required; advanced degree preferred (e.g., MBA)
Minimum 10+ years of successful and relevant leadership experience required
Effective blend of High IQ and High EQ, with backgrounds in Commercial, Strategy, Management Consulting, Communications, or senior Operations roles preferred
Strong knowledge of the pharma industry including trends and issues as they relate to AbbVie
Advanced project management capabilities leveraging tools, technologies, and systems that drive clear and simple processes
Demonstrated success in examining business environments, learning fast, grasping the essence, and executing with agility and resilience in response to opportunities and/or shifting priorities
Proven ability to shape narratives, craft compelling messages, and represent leadership in both internal and external forums across diverse stakeholders
Strong interpersonal skills that build relationships across a matrixed organization, foster alignment, inspire trust, and enable higher performance
Exceptional communication (written, verbal, presentation) skills and executive presence
Raises the bar in performance, embraces the ideas of others, and manages innovation to reality
Proactive problem-solver with proven ability to stay one step ahead

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
