Job Description
The associate director of scientific patient advocacy is part of the medical affairs team and supports AbbVie’s commitment to build strong relationships with the patient advocacy communities focusing on lung and blood cancers (MM, MDS, FL, MF). This role requires working closely to align goals, objectives, and strategies with colleagues across communications, commercial, medical affairs, legal and compliance to ensure key regulatory/data milestones and activities are communicated with patient communities regionally and nationally.
Develops and implements advocacy strategies aligned to corporate and business objectives
Establish, maintain, and enhance strategic relationships with relevant or prioritized patient advocacy, professional medical societies and policy organizations. Identify & direct activities based on business priorities and create mutually beneficial relationships. Represent AbbVie at key patient advocacy, professional medical and policy meetings and provide updates to management.
Develops a proactive approach to managing and enhancing company’s relationships with patient communities; builds strong, mutually productive relationships and provides compliant guidance to existing and/or evolving patient organizations
Provide strategic insight and coordination within AbbVie for relevant meetings with professional societies and to assist with decision making.
Identify, develop, and advance collaborative programs and initiatives with patient/HCP organizations at the national level as well as finding local opportunities that forward mutual goals and establish AbbVie as a preferred partner
Facilitates patient engagement including input in oncology trials, works closely with the trial teams to identify opportunities for patient involvement in research studies, manage patient engagement meetings, promote tools, training and communication to create more awareness within AbbVie
Drive and embed a patient-centric mindset and engagement in the oncology medical affairs team and activities by incorporating patient insights, advising on patient unmet needs
Build strong, collaborative relationships with team members in communications, medical affairs, commercial, clinical, legal and compliance.
Ensure cross-functional collaboration with medical, commercial, clinical, and other key stakeholders to optimally manage relationships to ensure alignment and effective execution of patient advocacy strategy/objectives.
Routinely evaluates opportunities to enhance AbbVie’s visibility in relevant initiatives and build AbbVie ’s reputation for innovative partnerships
Stays current with relevant information and resources regarding pharma related legislation; provides updates regularly to management
Strategically manages budgets for sponsorships/grants to patient organizations
Anticipates and recognizes patient advocacy/policy trends, and implications for AbbVie and brings these insights back to the therapeutic area
Develops and applies evaluative outcomes and insights to programs and activities to monitor success
Creates systems and procedures by which to track and internally communicate advocacy relations/interactions
Ensure a strong connection between employees and the patient community, including identifying innovative and compliant ways for employees to connect/engage with the community
Qualifications
10+ years’ experience in patient advocacy and professional society management (oncology preferred) or similar function/experience with a demonstrated track record of success
Demonstrated understanding of industry and business priorities and concerns and the ability to translate business needs into tactical patient/disease advocacy plans and materials
Demonstrated experience in implementing patient advocacy/HCP programs that drive business strategy and priorities and engage both internal and external stakeholders
Project and budget management experience
Established relationships within the oncology community desired
Skills
Outstanding oral and written communications and presentation skills
Relationship builder with exceptional interpersonal and networking skills
Ability to interact successfully and with confidence at all organizational levels, including senior leadership, and across a wide range of corporate functions
Strong project management skills, attention to detail and prioritization
Comfortable working within tight deadlines and managing multiple projects simultaneously
Works collaboratively, independently and with a sense of urgency; able to prioritize areas of strategic importance to the company and to help articulate to senior management
Self-starter, able to work independently
Collaborative problem solver who thinks outside the box

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.

Salary: $151,500 - $288,000
