The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Captain/Assistant Jail Commander to assist in the overall management and operation of the county jail. This position is crucial for maintaining order, ensuring the safety of inmates and staff, and upholding the standards of the Sheriff's Department. The Captain/Assistant Jail Commander will also be responsible for ensuring that post certification requirements are maintained and that personnel are informed of new agency policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

• Operational Oversight:

  • Assist the Jail Commander in managing the daily operations of the jail.
  • Ensure that all jail activities comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of jail operations, making recommendations for improvements as needed.

• Staff Supervision:

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate the performance of jail staff, including correctional officers and support personnel.
  • Assign duties and responsibilities to staff, ensuring that all shifts are adequately covered.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings to communicate updates, address concerns, and provide guidance.

• Certification and Training:

  • Ensure that all personnel meet and maintain post certification requirements.
  • Organize and oversee ongoing training programs for jail staff to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Keep personnel informed of new agency policies and procedures, ensuring compliance and understanding.

• Security and Safety:

  • Maintain a secure and safe environment within the jail facility.
  • Develop and implement security protocols and emergency response plans.
  • Investigate incidents and take appropriate corrective actions.

• Administrative Duties:

  • Assist with budget preparation and management for the jail.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports related to jail operations.
  • Oversee the inventory and maintenance of jail equipment and supplies.

• Inmate Management:

  • Ensure the proper classification, housing, and care of inmates.
  • Address inmate grievances and concerns in a timely and fair manner.
  • Coordinate with external agencies, such as courts and law enforcement, regarding inmate transfers and other matters.

• Support Services:

  • Provide support to the Jail Commander as needed.
  • Assist with special projects and initiatives related to jail operations.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field preferred.
• Extensive experience in corrections, including supervisory or management roles.
• Thorough knowledge of jail operations, security procedures, and inmate management.
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to handle high-stress situations and make sound decisions.
• Proficiency in using relevant software and technology for jail management.

Additional Requirements:

• Must pass a comprehensive background check and drug screening.
• Certification in correctional management and post certification requirements.
• Availability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
