Responsibilities
Do you want to be a part of a national security mission that conducts research and development? Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) is seeking a full-time Senior Engineer to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement control systems and instrumentation in a national laboratory environment. The Stockpile Experimentation & Operations (SEO) organization is looking for a highly motivated Senior Engineer to collaborate in the design, development, fabrication, and fielding of control systems and embedded systems that support high stakes weapons physics experiments conducted at the JASPER facility, located at the Nevada National Security Site, with occasional work assignments at other NNSS facilities, North Las Vegas, NV, Los Alamos, NM, and/or Livermore, CA. This Senior Engineer will report primarily to the JASPER facility at the NNSS in support of experiment related control systems.
Key Responsibilities
Work closely with engineers and technical staff at the Nevada National Security Site to design and implement industrial control systems and related instrumentation that support dynamic physic experiments.
Design and develop PLC based control systems.
Develop and maintain HMI screens and SCADA infrastructure.
Perform debugging and commissioning of current systems and system updates.
Develop system design drawings and documentation.
Work closely with other engineers and technical staff to ensure instrumentation and processes are implemented and fully tested.
Ensure technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques are used by controls team.
Develop solutions to problems of well-defined scope. Participates in developing field programs and designs.
Participate in customer and program meetings as a contributor and as a source of information.
Exercises discretion and independent judgment in how principles and methods are elected for and applied to work.
Serves as lead on teams requiring coordination with other teams. Coordinates work with other project team members.
Contributes to development of engineering solutions employing new principles, concepts, and/or techniques. Demonstrates advanced communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment. Recognized Subject Matter Expert by internal colleagues.
Interfaces directly with project and customers.
Follows established engineering and technical procedures and instructions.
Participates in developing field programs and designs using pre-determined principles and practices.
Prepares or contributes to designs, strategies, reports and technical procedures.
Often serves as a member of work teams.
Mentors less experienced staff in specific discipline.
Develops specifications for procurements and initiates purchase requests.
May travel to customer sites for program reviews, discussions and field demonstrations of systems.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees
Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering
Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB)
Or Professional Engineer license
Plus at least 5 years’ relevant experience.Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
Familiar with industrial control system architectures, communication networks, and protocols for OT/ICS/SCADA/DCS systems.
Experience with Modicon PLCs (Momentum, Quantum, M340, M580, etc.) desired.
Experience with Inductive Automation Ignition and/or AVEVA System Platform desired.
Previous education or training with programming languages. PLC ideal, but other object-oriented programming experience is acceptable.
Experience adhering to software development processes and configuration management.
CAD or Design experience (AutoCAD, Solidworks, EPLAN, etc.).
Experience with computer networking.
Database development experience desired.
Good technical writing and communication skills, and familiarity with PCs and PC application software such as MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Ability to interpret codes and standards applicable to the position.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write reports and technical documents.
Should be self-motivated and able to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
Ideally, the applicant will have strong time-management skills, be well organized, maintain safe work habits, and have a broad range of technical interests and education.
The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada).
Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday-Thursday (subject to change).
Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Annual salary range for this position is: $97,011.20 - $145,516.80.
Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
