Responsibilities

The Environmental Scientist II will provide environmental support and regulatory compliance at the NNSS and other locations operated by MSTS.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field inspections of facilities to ascertain compliance with air quality, wastewater, drinking water, solid waste, chemical reporting, and other environmental permits and regulations.

  • Review planning and activity-level documents to assure environmental elements are addressed.

  • Represent Environmental Compliance at Integrated Project Team meetings and other team meetings.

  • Assess projects and activities for conformance to procedures and plans.

  • Identify deficiencies, and tracks them to resolution and closure.

  • Collect information, reviews analytical reports and performs necessary calculations for permit reports and other permit deliverables.

  • Develop and revise company documents associated with environmental protection programs.

  • Interact with operational and other personnel and regulatory authorities.

  • Evaluate analytical and other data for adherence to established limits.

  • Prepare routine and non-routine reports.

  • Respond to environmental upsets such as spills and releases of regulated substances and prepares required reports.

  • Collect and analyze environmental data from company-wide sources.

  • Collaborate on environmental programs with senior staff, as assigned by the manager with emphasis in the area of water quality, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), but not limited other areas assigned by the Environmental Compliance manager.

  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a calculus-based (STEM) field, plus at least 2 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.

  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather and in hazardous conditions.

  • Ability to use judgement and follow oral and written instructions in completion of assigned tasks.

  • Ability to plan and organize work to assure that all assignments are completed within the required time frame.

  • Skill to read and understand scientific and technical documents and regulations.

  • Ability to write permit and regulatory reports based on scientific data and other information collected in the field and from other sources.

  • The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada).

  • Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change).

  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

    MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age.     Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in10 CFR Part 707.4 (http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=14b1c770db022992d237769fbe9fc519&mc=true&node=se10.4.707_14&rgn=div8) , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Annual salary range for this position is:$79,393.60 - $119,100.80.

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
