Position overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Light Source Directorate seeks a Maintenance Lead to join our Facilities, Building and Space Management team. Members of this team are responsible for providing dedicated support to the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Light Source Directorate’s Mission Statement.

In this position, you will lead and perform maintenance tasks of substantial complexity under general supervision. You will leverage in-depth knowledge in two or more trades such as carpentry, plumbing, roofing, sign shop, welding or other related trades to support assigned duties. This position reports to the Facilities F&O Building and Space Management Business Partner Supervisor.

SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park, CA.

Your specific responsibilities include:

Lead Functions:

  • Assign and explain tasks to workers based on instructions specifications received from supervisor.

  • Inspect work for conformance with specifications.

  • Train employees to meet quality and quantity standards.

  • Advise supervisor of work progress.

  • Adhere to safety rules and ensure they are followed.

  • Be the custodian of several fleet vehicles, forklifts, and aerial platform lifts.

  • Follow LOTO program according to SLAC ES&H guidelines.

General Maintenance

  • Perform a broad range of complex maintenance, preventive maintenance, repair, and other related tasks in support building installations, space management and interior and exterior infrastructures. The scope of work entails any of the following:

  • Cubicle and office setup including installing and/or reconfiguring office space: furniture, and peripheral items.

  • Installation of framing materials used for configurations including televisions, monitors, and other mechanical structures.

  • Flooring repairs and installation and/or replacement of Vinyl Composition Tile, laminate flooring, carpet, decking on outside walkways, cove base, etc.

  • Wall work including repair that may involve patch and paint, demolition, and reconstruction. Wall work may involve installing the frame, sheetrock/drywall, insulation, taping, mudding, and painting.

Roofing and maintenance

  • Repair and maintain roofs using a variety of materials suited to each situation makes repairs to damaged and leaking roofs.

  • Ceiling work includes replacement of ceiling tiles, ceiling grids, HVAC registers, lighting fixtures, and lightbulbs.

  • Makes repairs to flashings, gutters, pitch pockets, site screens and HVAC related equipment.

  • Inspect and maintain roofs during the dry season using new and innovative methods to prolong the life of the existing roofs.

  • Uses knowledge of roofing to recommend changes and repairs. Work with contractors to maintain and troubleshoot roofing systems.

  • Work from blueprints, sketches, or verbal instructions to construct and repair structural woodwork.

  • Lay out work as required.

  • Build, repair and install counters, benches, partitions, floors, doors, stairs, ladders, building framework, etc.

  • Shape materials to prescribed measurements.

  • Install paneling to walls and ceilings.

  • Fit and install windows, doors, door frames, etc.

  • Construct concrete forms and pouring chutes, may do some concrete finishing.

  • Select and install various sound insulation materials.

Plumbing and Welding

  • Repair faucets, toilets, basins, hot water heaters, toilets, sinks, garbage disposals Assemble small water pipe fittings, repair or replace pipes.

  • Perform welding jobs that require a fire watch.

  • Assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures for gas, water and sanitary lines, storm drains, toilets, sinks, valves, pumps, drinking fountains, eyewash stations.

  • Bend pipe to required angle.

  • Join pipe by use of flanges, fittings, solder, caulking, welding, epoxy cement and diversified materials.

  • Detect malfunctions in plumbing systems, shut systems down, and make repairs.

  • Work on glass, plastic, copper, brass, steel, and cast-iron pipe Seal-cast iron pipe joints with caulking and lead Install and repair gas lines.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Four years’ experience in general maintenance trades such as plumbing, carpentry, roofing, electrical, HVAC, and/or other related trade. Sufficient skill and experience to qualify as a journey-level worker in two or more of the trades. This may include time spent as an apprentice or in vocational training or a combination of equivalent education and relevant experience.

  • Full working knowledge of maintenance and craft procedures and practices in at least two of the trades.

  • Demonstrated ability to install, maintain, and repair a wide variety of complex fixtures and diagnose routine and non-routine issues and perform on specialized installations such as experimental hutches and accelerator housing’s infrastructure.

  • Ability to read blueprints, diagrams, and sketches.

  • Must be skilled in the use of the tools, material, and equipment required to perform assigned duties.

  • Demonstrated ability to estimate materials and time required for completion of a job, and to maintain adequate records and supplies of materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex carpentry duties.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex plumbing related welding, and brazing.

  • Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision. Provide guidance and support to other technicians and be able to work in a diverse collaborative environment.

  • Must have demonstrated ability to schedule and prioritize own work.

  • Must be able to adhere to site environmental and safety rules, regulations, and requirements.

  • Knowledge of all applicable federal, state DOE, OSHA rules and regulations

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Non-commercial Class license.

The expected pay range for this position is $ 52.81 (Step 1) - $64.03 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
