The DCEO Chief Engineer is responsible for data centre engineering operations across a number of data centre sites in Melbourne.

This role will require that you are able to maintain a strong degree of influence over technical operations for a number of data centre facilities, foster strong working relationships with vendors, and provide senior-level technical guidance to less-experienced operators.

As well as ensuring the smooth flow of day-to-day technical operations, you will also contribute significantly to our planned growth in the Melbourne region, for new site builds and expansions of existing sites.

Key job responsibilities

  • Participate in an on-call escalation roster across the data centre region

  • Responsible for the on-site management of contractors, sub-contractors and vendors, ensuring that all work performed, is in accordance with established practices, procedures & local legislation

  • Establish performance benchmarks, conduct analyses & prepare reports on all aspects of the critical facility infrastructure operations & maintenance

  • Generate change management requests & incident management tickets for events that DCEO are responsible to manage

  • Work with DC managers and other business leaders to coordinate projects, manage capacity, and optimize plant safety, performance, reliability, sustainability and efficiency

  • Establish documentation relevant to business & facility operations

  • Responsible for the installation of the racks and the provision of power/cooling within its constraints

  • Review the management of both routine maintenance and emergency services on a variety of critical systems such as: switchgear, generators, UPS systems, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, building monitoring systems, etc.

  • Assist in the design, implementation, commissioning and build out of new facilities

  • Drive & implement projects to increase current facility capacity, efficiency, sustainability & reliability.

  • Management of the facility assets and the provision of infrastructure & inventory asset management

  • Attend and participate in regular construction & operational meetings as required

  • Familiar with work order compliance to ensure all contractual SLAs are achieved.

  • Interface with Infra Ops management for day to day operational requirements.

  • Assist in recruiting efforts

  • Assist in the the resolution of any infrastructure engineering or services issue

  • Day to day technical oversight and guidance of a team of engineering operation technicians

A day in the life

No two days are the same in AWS data centres but, typically, your day will include:

  • Attending operational meetings to foster awareness of important activities across the Melbourne data centre region

  • Mentoring and development of less experienced engineering operations technicians

  • Planning and scheduling of maintenance activities for critical infrastructure

  • Collaborating on solving complex engineering problems impacting critical infrastructure

  • Collaboration with other AWS data centre regions globally

  • Attending project meetings to influence the design and build of new facilities

Basic Qualifications

  • Team leadership skills

  • 4+ years of relevant work experience in maintaining a DC or other critical space facility

  • Familiar with the concepts and interaction of service management systems (problem & change)

  • Experience with the development of MOPs & SWMS for planned works

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree or technical (military/trade school) qualifications and relevant experience

  • 6+ years of data centre engineering/operations experience

  • 4+ years of data centre management experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or relevant discipline
