Description of Work

This is an apprentice level technician which involves technical work supporting higher level technicians or engineers in construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, erosion control, and construction traffic control. This position requires the performance of a wide variety of standardized and non- standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data. This work involves limited decision making and use of judgment. The successful applicant must perform a full range of calculations and computations. This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.

As an entry level professional at the NCDOT, Apprentices are offered a starting salary of $35,984 and are eligible to receive salary adjustments upon successful completion of all apprentice steps. Upon completion of the program, Apprentices will be eligible for a salary of $48,036.

Approximately a 2 year program (Could take longer if requirements are not met.)

  • 4000 hours of OJT

  • 2596 hours of related instruction (Community College AAS degree)

Related Instruction is through enrollment in a community college to acquire an Associate of Applied Science degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Survey/Geomatics Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution. To remain eligible for the program, enrollment in community college AAS degree program is required.

Upon completion of the apprenticeship program, participants will receive a Journey-worker card issued by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Analytical thinking, proven academic success, strong written and oral communication skills and leadership potential

  • Interest in transportation e.g. transportation and environmental planning, design, construction and maintenance.

  • Basic knowledge and skills of computer equipment, iPads, and software.

  • Ability to effectively use verbal and nonverbal skills to express routine or simple technical and/or program concepts and related facts in a clear, concise, organized and persuasive manner.

  • Ability to communicate with other staff to ensure that tasks are completed correctly and in a timely manner.

Additional Expectations:

Safety toe shoes required. The selected candidate will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Employees in this position may be exposed to high traffic volumes, may work at heights over water or traffic, and may have to climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. This position must be able to safely perform manual tasks involving the bush axe and other tools on steep and rough terrain. This position is expected to carry testing equipment over rough and steep terrain. This position will be required to lift and carry at least 50 pounds. The successful applicant for this position is expected to safely work high above ground, be proficient in record keeping, and engineering testing equipment.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School diploma/General Educational Development diploma and currently in the process of acquiring an Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Survey/Geomatics Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution.
