Job Description Summary

The Continuous Improvement Manager is responsible for the leadership and direction of the Continuous Improvement Program at the BDDS Mebane, NC facility. This role will define, prioritize and implement strategies, programs and project initiatives to advance BD Excellence, including Cost to Win, Zero Loss, KAS, 6-Sigma, Lean, Blitzes and other BD Excellence components. The CI Manager will lead cross functional teams, work with OpEx DS lead to ensure synergy and compliance, as well as negotiate for resources to drive projects to a successful and timely completion to support business objectives of Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost Improvement.

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Responsible for the planning, implementation and execution of all CI activities at the Site.

  2. Responsible for planning, implementing and training associates on BD Excellence (Lean).

  3. Responsible for working directly with other Functional Managers to ensure that CI budgetary and project goals are achieved on schedule.

  4. Serving as primary Coordinator of the Site's Lean/Six Sigma Programs.

  5. Responsible for the development and implementation of a strategic plan for continuous improvement of the value streams for each of the plant’s primary product manufacturing processes and ensuring that they are optimized for throughput and waste (OEE).

  6. Working with Plant and DS Engineering, plans, schedules, organizes and delegates CI projects activities. Sets goals, establishes priorities and coordinates project resources in the development of concepts and approaches and then reviews progress/results and reports them to plant management.

  7. Collaborates with other functional departments to generate cost savings project lists. Proactively leads multiple teams to the desired results. Prioritizes cost savings projects. Manages to savings and timeline completion.

  8. Coordinates with R&D, Marketing and Quality as necessary on CI projects to manage the evaluation of improvements to those processes, including evaluation of and improvements to those processes. Proficiently supervises the ECO process for assigned projects.

  9. Ensures regulatory compliance of CI projects by collaborating with the applicable groups. Follows all local state, federal and BD safety laws, policies and procedures including HCRA Hazardous Waste regulations. Aligns with all local BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through consistent application of sound quality assurance principles.

  10. Supervisory responsibility as assigned.

  11. All other duties assigned by Plant Manager.

JOB DIMENSIONS:

  • Develops and drives remediation plans for savings gaps as needed

  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, fluency in interpreting and modeling the BD values, ability to seek guidance from others, ability to relinquish control, and knowledge of current and anticipated customer needs.

  • Works closely with Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Engineering/Facilities, Human Resources, Finance and Product Support.

  • Work content requires independent thought and execution, with little supervision.

  • Success depends on the ability to influence and manage change at all levels, work effectively multi-functionally, maximising the knowledge of subject-matter experts within DS and broader BDX organization.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or another related field

  • 8 or more years of progressive experience in technical and/or management roles in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience implementing and leading Continuous Improvement through PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) methodology

  • Previous experience in an FDA-regulated (cGMP) industry or similarly regulated

  • Certification or demonstrated expertise in with lean manufacturing and/or Six Sigma

  • Experience developing manufacturing process, writing procedures and training manufacturing associates

  • Experience with MRP, production and logistics planning

  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Project, Visio)

  • Good interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, negotiation and time management skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly cross-functionally

  • Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in Management, Engineering or related field

  • Knowledge and experience with high and low volume Medical Device manufacturing

  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system transactions and flow (SAP preferred)

  • Experience with hazardous materials manufacturing

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Provides leadership, direction, and supervision for non-exempt and/or exempt associates, including writing performance evaluations
