Department Summary:

MITRE Lab’s Energy, Environmental, Material, and Chemical Sciences Department is seeking a senior engineer with expertise in energy and power technologies and techno-economics to work in a dynamic analytical and systems engineering environment focused on solving our customers’ energy technology and resilience challenges. This department serves as a vanguard for MITRE to meet the future needs of our customers, requiring technical excellence while encouraging creativity and fostering interests in current and emerging technologies across its diverse membership. Job Description:

  • Evaluate energy and power technologies and their maturation and scaling challenges through analytical, model-based (e.g., techno-economic models), and experimental assessment

  • Evaluate future energy and power technology scientific- and market-driven trends and overall limitations in unique MITRE customer environments and within the context of their global supply chains

  • Characterize the maturity, limitations, and capabilities of emerging energy and power technologies, to include manufacturability, recycling potential, cost, and performance in customer applications

  • Collaborate with transdisciplinary experts from across MITRE, our customers, and partners, providing subject matter expertise in energy and power technologies, their manufacture, their supply chains, and techno-economic modeling.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience in one of the following fields: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Systems Engineering, and/or Nuclear Engineering.

  • Deep technical expertise in one or more energy technology areas, including: power electronics, thermal management systems, batteries, photovoltaics, nuclear power generation, fuel cells, and long-term energy storage.

  • Experience conducting and communicating techno-economic modeling and analysis, to include lifecycle cost analysis, discounted cash flow analysis, and cost-benefit analysis, of energy and power technologies

  • Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills.

  • The ability to conduct research and development of new energy and power technologies to meet customer requirements in a collaborative environment with both internal and external researchers.

  • The ability to think critically and be proactive in pursuing research and problem-solving with minimal supervision.

  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a U.S. government security investigation and must be able to obtain a Department of Defense SECRET clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS and 3 years of relevant experience or PhD in one of the following areas: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Systems Engineering, and/or Nuclear Engineering.

  • Extensive experience and expertise, including recent publications, in the techno-economic modeling of emerging energy and power technologies.

  • Basic understanding of a broad range of energy storage, energy conversion, energy harvesting technologies, power distribution, power generation, and power management systems.
