POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: GIS ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN
DUTIES
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The essential function of the position within the organization is provide all mapping, design and
upgrades for any projects needed by the city and any surveying required by various departments
such as Utility Maintenance, Street Department and Public Works Department.
PRIMARY DUTIES: This list represents the essential tasks performed by the position. Employees
may be assigned additional duties by management as required.
Assist Public Works Director in work groups and/or service areas of the Engineering Department
including GIS Data collection and mapping, field inspections and related operations, functions
and program areas.
Collects data to perform work.
Prepare record drawings and update atlas sheets of infrastructure projects.
Ensure updates to water and sewer atlas. Prepare storm water draining atlas.
Design water, sewer, general engineering and miscellaneous city infrastructure projects.
Reproduce plans and specifications per code.
Update any building permits to digital maps as required.
Provide construction surveys for various departments.
Assist Engineers with designs, takes measurements, prepares layouts, calculates linear area and
volume quantities.
Prepare and print all maps and projects for the City, provides mapping of utilities.
Creates surveys and drafts.
Knowledgeable of basic engineering principles and terminology.
Participate in the maintenance of records and related documentation; prepare performance and
other reports detailing GIS workload and activities.
Attend and participate in professional group meetings, stay abreast of new trends and innovations
in the field of GIS in engineering.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Uses basic algebra involving variables and formulas and/or basic geometry involving plane and
solid figures, circumferences, areas, and volumes and/or computing discounts and interest
rates.
COMMUNICATIONS REQUIREMENTS: Communications involves the ability to read, write,
and speak.
Reads simple sentences or instructions; writes simple sentences; speaks simple sentences using
basic grammar.
COMPLEXITY OF WORK: Complexity of Work addresses the analysis, initiative, ingenuity,
creativity, and concentration required by the position and the presence of any unusual pressures.
Performs semi-routine work following procedures, with occasional problems; requires normal
attention for accurate results.
