DUTIES: A Communications Technician Trainee is an important trainee position that involves learning and assisting in technical work involving responsibility for the installation, repair and maintenance of the County Emergency Services, Office of the Sheriff, and Public Facilities communications and radio equipment and related systems. The incumbent receives on-the-job training while performing duties of a limited skilled nature under close and continuing supervision. Instructions and training are received from a journey-level technician or supervisor in all technical aspects of the work. Does related work as required. Trainee appointments are for a period of one year beginning on the date of permanent appointment. At the conclusion of the one year training period, incumbents receiving satisfactory ratings will be advanced to the title of Communications Technician without further examination or probation period. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and either: A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college with an Associates degree in a field closely related to Electrical Technology/Engineering or Computer Science; OR B. Successful completion of a certificate course related to radio communications and six (6) months of experience in the maintenance, repair and installation of electronic equipment utilizing either two-way communications systems or computer-based networks/operational control systems; OR C. Two (2) years of experience as listed in B above. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Possession, at time of application, appointment and during service in this class, of a valid motor vehicle operators license permitting legal operation of a Class D vehicle in New York State. EDUCATION/AGE REQUIREMENT: Candidates who will meet education/age requirements within 12 months of the exam date, will be permitted to take the examination but will not be eligible for canvassing or permanent appointment until proof of fulfilling the education/age requirements have been furnished to this office. It is the sole responsibility of the candidate to provide all necessary transcripts for required education and a copy of the required license or professional certificate upon completion.
