Reporting directly to the SVP of Research & Development, Quality, Regulatory & EHS, the position of Vice President of Research & Development - Innovation plays a critical role in setting the strategic direction and execution of innovative research initiatives to drive product development and growth within ScottsMiracle-Gro. Responsibilities include overseeing members of the R&D team, identifying emerging trends and technologies in agriculture and gardening, and collaborating cross functionally to bring new products to market. You will play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of experimentation, creativity and continuous improvement to maintain the company's position at the forefront of the Lawn and Garden Industry. In this role you will: * Innovation Strategy: Identify the capabilities needed to meet the current and emerging business needs for research and development, implement a comprehensive R&D innovation strategy that aligns with the company's goals and objectives, identify and stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and market opportunities, leveraging expertise in agricultural sciences for product development. * Technical Expertise: Provide technical leadership and expertise by driving the development of innovative Lawn and Garden lifestyle products from concept to commercialization and leading product ideation, evaluation, and scale-up processes; all while ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and regulatory standards. * Collaboration: Foster collaboration and partnerships with external research institutions, universities, and industry experts to access cutting-edge research, technologies, and talent. Collaborate cross-functionally with other departments such as marketing, sales, and operations to ensure alignment and integration of R&D efforts with business objectives. * Intellectual Property: Manage the company's intellectual property portfolio by identifying, protecting, and leveraging patents, trademarks, and trade secrets related to novel technologies, formulations, and processes developed through R&D efforts. * Talent Development: Mentor, develop and recruit (as necessary) a high-performing R&D team. Provide coaching, training, and resources to empower team members to excel in their roles and contribute to the company's innovation agenda. Recognize the value of different perspectives; instill trust, and gain confidence of others through integrity and authenticity. What you'll need to be successful: * Doctorate Degree - Relevant biological science emphasizing horticulture, plant biology or agricultural science.
