Astellas Pharma Canada (APCA) is currently searching for a Software Engineer – Full Stack Developer reporting to the Head of DigitalX.

DigitalX, our new information technology function, is spearheading this value driven transformation across Astellas. We are looking for people who excel in embracing change, manage technical challenges, and have exceptional communication skills.

We are seeking committed and talented Software Engineers both Junior and Senior, to join our new Software Engineering chapter in InformationX, which lies at the heart of DigitalX. This is an excellent opportunity to get expose to cutting edge software development initiatives, such as becoming a member of our Gen AI pod within FoundationX, where you will be responsible for ensuring our Gen AI platform and derived solutions are operational. You will play a pivotal role in building, maintaining, and enhancing our Gen AI and platform architecture across commercial, manufacturing and medical functions. In addition, you will have the opportunity to use your proven agile delivery skills across a diverse range of initiatives, utilize your software development skills, and contribute to the continuous improvement/delivery of critical IT solutions.

Essential Skills & Knowledge:

  • Good Engineering Practices: Possess a strong understanding of software development lifecycle and experienced in building solutions from scratch all the way into production with good engineering principles in mind.

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong coding skills in Typescript, Python, coupled with expertise in Backend and API development.

  • CI/CD & DevOps Principles: Proficient in standardizing, deploying and scaling solutions in Production using CI/CD tools and DevOps principles, like containerization.

  • Analytical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to lead ad hoc analyses, identify performance gaps, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Agile Champion: Proven track record of applications developed using Agile methodologies, such as Scrum or SAFe.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain frontend applications using React, Angular, or Vue.js for user interaction with AI models.

  • Develop and maintain backend services using languages like Python, Java, or Node.js to support generative AI applications.

  • Design and implement RESTful and GraphQL APIs for AI model interaction and data processing.

  • Manage and optimize SQL and NoSQL databases to store and retrieve AI-related data.

  • Ensure high performance and responsiveness of backend services for AI workloads.

  • Mentor other members of the team and help them grow in their skillset.

  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives identifying opportunities to optimise performance security and maintainability of existing platform architecture and other technology investments.

  • Participate in the continuous delivery pipeline by implementing DevOps best practises for version control, automation, and deployment.

  • Stay up to date on the latest trends and technologies in backend development and cloud platforms.

Preferred Skills & Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in frontend technologies like React, Angular, or Vue.js.

  • Experience with backend development using Python, Node.js, Django, or similar frameworks.

  • Familiarity with Azure and AWS cloud environments.

  • Experience with API development (RESTful and GraphQL).

  • Knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases.

  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

  • Ability to think innovatively and propose creative solutions to complex technical challenges.

  • Demonstrated understanding of technical delivery.

Education & Experience:

  • Master’s Degree or higher in computer science, information technology, or related field (or equivalent experience.)

  • Minimum 2-5 years (Junior) 5-7 years + (Senior) experience in full stack development with a strong understanding of front end (HTML, CSS, Typescript, Javascript, responsive design React, etc.), back-end (Java, Python, node JS), API development (REST, GraphQL) technologies.

  • Minimum 2-5 years (Junior) 5-7 years + (Senior) experience in application monitoring tools (App Insights, Cloudwatch)

  • Minimum 2-5 years (Junior) 5-7 years + (Senior) experience of cloud platforms (mainly Azure, be familiar with AWS and GCP). A deeper understanding/certification of AWS and Azure is considered a plus.

  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases (AWS Redshift, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, ElasticSearch, Cassandra for example.)

  • Experience with Containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) will be considered a plus.
