With operations going back to 1861, we boast a remarkably long history of success in the Minnesota aggregate and asphalt industry.Position OverviewThis is a highly skilled position involving control of the depth and smoothness of the asphalt mat behind the Asphalt Paving machine. Observe the distribution of paving material along the screed and control the direction of the screed to eliminate voids at curbs and joints, other equipment may include Bobcat, Self-propelled broom, and roller (asphalt or dirt).Local Union Wage: $43.24Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)Operates Screed on the back of asphalt paving machine rubber tired or track typeManipulates cranks to control the depth of paving machine that spreads and levels asphaltic concrete on sub-grade of highway and related surfaces such as parking lots, streets, etc., turns hand-wheels to raise or lower screeds, regulates the width of screed.May perform other related duties, such as adding or removing screed extensions, installing or removing automatic devices, grade log, or other accessories associated with the machine.Thorough understanding of all aspects of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction, and other details related to asphalt paving.The operator is responsible for the efficient working condition of the equipment and is expected to perform minor servicing and maintenance or refer major problems to the supervisor.Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.Other duties as may be assigned.QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Education/ExperienceA high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.3 to 5 years related to asphalt and road construction experience and/or training; or equivalent. combination of education and experience is preferred.CDL preferred, or the willingness to obtain a CDL license upon hire.Work RequirementsMust be 18 years of age or older.Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.Regular and consistent attendance is required and must be willing to work evenings and weekends when necessary.Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.Ability to comprehend verbal and written simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.Knowledge of operating heavy construction equipment.Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction and paving.Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations and construction sites.Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently under a variety of working conditions.Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.Ability to operate heavy and complex equipment requiring skill and independent judgment.Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary; some overnight travel may be required.Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.
