BWXT is currently seeking a Controls & Automation Engineer for its Lynchburg, VA location!

BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven - be part of BWXT’s innovation hub. BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.

Advanced Technologies (AT) is seeking a Controls & Automation Engineer with an interest in digital engineering and digital transformation in production of major innovations. Your skills in data modeling, analytics, machine learning, senors or robotics will support the research and development of a wide range of nuclear products for space applications, clean power, propulsion, and medicine.

This position is in Lynchburg, Virginia and can be eligible for relocation benefits dependent on the candidate. This position also requires light travel.

Job Description / Duties:

  • Design, build, and test integrated controlled loop feedback automation systems for complex chemical and materials manufacturing processes.

  • Work with process engineers, materials scientists, and data scientists, to develop control and automation systems that enable deep process understanding and controlability.

  • Develop control system requirements and automation interface requirements for pilot scale production line, that can scale to a full production facility.

  • Develop system level control architecture for a scaled advanced materials manufacturing line.

  • Lead efforts to develop a technology roadmap for AT's future materials production capabiliity, identify critical areas for research and development, and work with necessary teams and stakeholders to execute against these.

  • This is an innovation role, must be self-starting and comfortable supporting multiple teams, systems and developing products.

Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A minimum of 4 years of industry experience.

  • A Bachelors Degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related field required.

  • Experience with advanced in-situ sensors and tightly coupled controled feedback loops for continous manufacturing or production processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a complex technical development effort, including generation of requirements from stakeholders and customers, execution against those requirements.

  • Travel (10-20%) domestic is required.

  • Must be a US Citizen.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with standing up a new production or pilot line (chemical, material, etc…).

  • Experience with machine learning and data science for process control and sensor fusion.

The base salary range for this position in [[stateProvince]] at the start of employment is expected to be between $[[custsalaryMin]] and $[[custsalaryMax]] per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
