Position Description:

As public information officer for the Texas Tech Police Department (TTPD), you will serve as a liaison between the TTPD and the Marketing & Communications office, playing a critical role in enhancing communication and transparency, building positive relationships with the campus community and effectively and accurately disseminating information. Reporting to leadership in both the TTPD and Marketing & Communications, you will be responsible for managing police-related public relations, media inquiries and communication strategies to promote a safe and secure campus environment.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • Serve as a spokesperson for the TTPD.

  • Respond promptly and professionally, in coordination with Marketing & Communications, to media inquiries, providing accurate and timely information.

  • Be prepared to issue mass notifications (TechAlert) in an emergency, following an established process.

  • Collaborate with Marketing & Communications to align messaging with the university’s overall communication strategy.

  • Develop and implement communication plans to promote the department’s initiatives, events and campus engagement efforts.

  • Oversee the TTPD’s social media presence, ensuring content is informative and aligns with university messaging and branding and monitoring conversations and addressing concerns.

  • Assist in responding to open records requests

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations or a related field. Previous experience in communications, marketing or public relations, preferably in a higher education or law enforcement setting. FEMA Public Information Officer (PIO) Program credentials are a plus.

  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Be able to work effectively in high-pressure situations and respond as needed, including outside of normal working hours.

  • Stay informed about best practices in public information.

  • Institutional knowledge and a familiarity with law enforcement procedures and terminology is a plus.

  • High-level attention to detail and ability to quickly learn new systems.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

  • Express ideas/information in a complete, clear, concise and organized manner.

Because of the sensitive nature of the information handled, successful completion of a background investigation is required. In addition to the application through Texas Tech University, qualified candidates will be asked to complete the following:

  1. Authorization to Release Information: This allows the TTPD to conduct a background check. This document must be notarized. The Texas Tech Police Department has notaries available.

  2. Personal History Statement: This is a lengthy document and MUST be completed as the instructions read. Failure to complete the PHS as stated could lead to the candidate’s disqualification.
