Position Description:

The Assistant Managing Director – Residential Education is responsible for providing high-level, strategic oversight for several functional areas including student leadership, academic development, recruitment & training, summer operations, and the off-campus housing office. Additional essential job functions for the AMD include supervision, institutional support, administration, and on-call/emergency response. The Assistant Managing Director - Residential Education is supervised by the Managing Director for University Student Housing.

Major/Essential Functions:

Residence Education and Institutional Support (35%)

  • Establish vision and strategic plan for functional areas under AMD’s supervision ensuring initiatives support departmental mission, vision, values and goals

  • Partner with Assistant Managing Director for Residential Living to ensure complimentary operation of all areas of Residence Life

  • Direct, manage and guide staff on the implementation of programmatic, administrative, and assessment initiatives for the following areas: student leadership, academic development, recruitment & training, summer operations, and the off-campus housing office

  • Collaborate with University Student Housing leadership to support the accomplishment of the mission, vision, and strategic initiatives of the department

  • Ensure compliance of Residence Life staff regarding risk management requirements

  • Lead implementation of departmental initiatives including residential curriculum and student scholarships

  • Assist with the creation and implementation of policies and procedures related to the management of Residence Life and University Student Housing

  • Coordinate with other stakeholders and staff to create programs and service which support the development of students

  • Develop and maintain relationships and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders

Supervision (25%)

  • Recruit, train, directly supervise, and evaluate three mid-level staff members including a Director for Student Leadership and Development, a Program Director for Academic Support, and a Program Director for Staff Development and Summer Operations

  • Contribute to and monitor the professional development of area staff  

  • Provide indirect supervision and support to Residence Life Professional, Full-Time and Student Staff  

  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with direct supervisees and indirect staff, as assigned  

  • Train and advise Residence Life Staff on specialty area operations

Administration (20%)

  • Provide administrative oversight for area functions including but not limited to budget management, residential curriculum, payroll approval, Maxient and student of concern reporting, and other departmental databases and systems

  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders

  • Assist with summer conference contract development and review

  • Assess and report on effectiveness of area initiatives

  • Chair and serve on departmental or Residence Life committee or liaison opportunities, as assigned

On-Call/Emergency Response (20%)

  • Serve as a member of the Residence Life Managing Director On-Call Team for a residential population of over 8000 students

  • Be available on a call-to-duty status to assist with residence hall and campus emergencies

  • Communicate appropriately with emergency personnel, University Student Housing, and other campus officials as needed

  • Support residence life leadership team and professional staff in responding to crises and providing follow-up

Schedule Details:

M-F 7:30am-4:30pm + on-call. Conference travel as necessary

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree

  • 6+ years of progressive work experience in higher education and 3+ years of midlevel residence life management experience or related field

  • A record of effective supervisory and budget management experience

  • Knowledge and practice in adult learning theories and application of theory to the development of leadership

  • Experience in creating academic partnerships

  • Skills related to leading multi-functional team project teams preferred
