University of Louisville Network Engineer I in Louisville, Kentucky

Minimum Requirements:Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Grade 5 (Salaried)Position Description:The ITS Network & Telecom department is seeking a Network Engineer I. This entry level network engineering position with the University of Louisville entails working with the network technicians with physical network components as well as working with the network management team to monitor, manage, program, install and maintain the University’s communications networks. This position requires basic knowledge of networking equipment and services, and an interest in learning and developing skills and experience. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESAssist with physical upgrades in wiring closets to help complete the access layer switch refresh project.Learning the campus cable plant through working both physically and logically with the technicians and engineers.Patching, upgrading, and maintaining software on the communications network, including work in many maintenance windows which fall outside normal business hours.Assist with closing tickets for DNS, DHCP and port assignment requests.Perform wireless site surveys with UofL commercial tools in preparation for wireless refresh and for ongoing troubleshooting.Work with SNMP management tools and assisting with keeping them up to date, including data entry and scripting as required.Configuring and deploying devices for network out-of-band management.Field troubleshooting connectivity and performance problems.Maintaining and improving existing network documentation.Expand knowledge and experience in network field through on-the-job training, self-study, certifications, and professional development activities.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSExperience working with campus infrastructure equipment desiredNetwork certifications desiredExperience with Cisco iOS desiredExperience with scripting and programming desiredCOMPETENCIESAbility and desire to learn new skills and gain experienceOrganized with a strong work ethicResponsible and a self-starterTeamwork and ability to work with othersCompensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.Equal Employment OpportunityThe University of Louisville is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and is committed to providing employment opportunities to all qualified applicants without regard to race, sex, age, color, national origin, ethnicity, creed, religion, disability, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and expression, marital status, pregnancy, or veteran status.
