Kaiser Permanente Technical Director, Molecular Genetics in Los Angeles, California

Job Summary:

The Molecular Genetics Technical Director will be responsible for supporting the clinical, technical and regulatory aspects of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory. The technical director is responsible for the assessment, development, refinement and implementation of current and future clinical Molecular Genetic testing, in addition to presenting and educating staff in these testing methods. The technical director is expected to interface with all clinical and laboratory staff including management, medical directors, ordering providers and technical staff.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • The technical director is responsible for reviewing, interpreting and sign-out of Molecular Genetics reports in a high-volume testing environment.

  • In conjunction with additional Molecular Genetic technical staff, the technical director must be able to educate on appropriate interpretation and test usage, while actively refining and developing laboratory tests and procedures.

  • Able to analyze and prepare reports for integration into medical and management decisions to yield continuous improvement in the laboratory.

  • Other necessary functions include, but not limited to:

  • Perform assay development and planning of validations.

  • Compose validation summaries with relevant and appropriate descriptions of performance characteristics.

  • Conduct and review proficiency testing.

  • Conduct internal inspections.

  • Interact with referral laboratories.

  • Implement quality assurance measures.

  • Troubleshoot and investigate laboratory testing issues and be actively involved in the solutions to maintain a high quality Molecular Genetic laboratory.

  • Assist in assay trouble-shooting and implementation of new assays

  • Monitor compliance in-regards to a safe working environment.

  • Assist in the training of technologist and technical consultation with operations staff.

  • Observe compliance with regulatory agencies, including inspections.

  • Monitor of quality assurance and improvement at all levels of practice. Assist managers in quality improvement projects.

  • Assume Clinical Consultant or Technical Supervisor responsibilities.

  • Other duties as deemed necessary by the Medical Director/Physician Director of the laboratory. Interpret results for of clinical genetic testing

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

  • 3 years of training and working experience in a clinical molecular genetics/pathology laboratory, reviewing and interpreting test data.

Education

  • Ph.D. degree in Genetics or related fields.

License, Certification, Registration

  • Clinical Molecular Genetics and Genomics Certificate from American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics OR High-complexity Clinical Laboratory Director Certificate

  • Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist License (California)

Additional Requirements:

  • Knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and California regulations.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor Management/Partnership environment.

  • Experience with complex Molecular Genetic methodologies, including next generation sequencing, microarray, open array, RT-PCR, and other specialty in Molecular Genetics.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a cooperative and integrated laboratory environment that includes other high complexity genetic testing.

  • Demonstrated good decision-making and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • California license for Molecular Genetics Director (DRN license)

  • Certification by American Board of Medical Genetics in Cytogenetics may be preferred depending on position needs.

  • Certification by American Board of Medical Genetics in Biochemical Genetics may be preferred depending on position needs.

  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills.

  • The capability of being continuously updated in literature in regard to its medical applications.
