The LA County Board of Supervisors recently declared a local state of emergency for homelessness,and the County is working to revise and expand our response to help all who are affected. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to help us in the mission of addressing issues like housing, mental health, and substance use. If you are looking for a new career that will directly benefit the population of LA County, this may be the opportunity for you.

The Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Senior Typist-Clerk vacancies related to the homelessness crisis.

Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

Before the end of your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.

Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Senior-Typist Clerk.

Essential Job Functions

Types and processes court orders, minutes, petitions, and other legal documents requiring the analysis of complex source material and a thorough familiarity with the various legal codes in order to obtain the necessary data.

Answers questions that require such things as searching for and abstracting technical data and detailed explanation of laws, policies, or procedures, checks non-routine applications, collects variable fees, etc., and refers only unusual inquiries to his immediate superior.

Checks legal documents such as writs, petitions, warrants, purchase orders, claims and bonds for form, validity, and compliance with legal requirements in cases requiring the application of highly specialized knowledge and the resolution of debatable points, and where a mistake in judgment may entail serious consequences.

Makes statistical computations and analyses, estimates of fees, etc., where specialized knowledge of laws, policies, and procedures are involved to an unusual degree, as in the recording of documents, property assessments, and tax collections.

Advises employees on problems within his jurisdiction, and on his own initiative, makes such decisions as are permissible.

Reviews for accuracy and conformity to established procedures the work of others performing preliminary operations in the course of the flow of work.

Makes final check of permits, authorizations, etc., without higher level review.

Prepares correspondence requiring the application of highly specialized knowledge and discrimination in the selection of data or interpretation of laws, rules, or policies.

Supervise a small section or unit engaged in related work where responsibility for supervision is subordinate to the performance of the highly specialized clerical work.

Routinely access such office equipment as video display terminals, word processors, or personal computers to input data, perform computations, or produce documents not requiring the formatting or programming of such equipment.

Three years office clerical experience involving typewriting, one year of which must have been in a *specialized capacity.

EXAMINATION CONTENT :

In order to qualify, applicants must pass a County of Los Angeles approved typing test at a minimum of 40 words per minute.

Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

IMPORTANT TYPING TEST INFORMATION:

A qualifying typing performance test of 40 net words-per-minute will be administered to candidates who have not held a typing position in the service of the County of Los Angeles. Candidates must successfully complete the typing performance test at time of filing to qualify.

Applicants who have not taken a typing test administered by the Los Angeles County can apply to the "Typing Test-Score Banking Only" announcement bulletin, consisting of a timed typing test designed to measure speed accuracy in typing. Typing performance test results from this examination will be used for the Senior-Typist Clerk, Emergency Appointment exam, which requires a proficiency at 40 net words per minute. Benefit Information: Depending on the position, the successful candidate will enroll in a contributory defined benefit pension plan if the candidate is a “new member” of the County’s defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013 (first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012) – unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013.
