Overview

Purpose Statement/Position Summary: The Tsai Lab at CHLA is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join our research program as a Research Assistant. The Tsai Lab studies the genomics of pediatric brain tumors, focusing on using functional genomics approaches to characterize tumor drivers and identify novel dependencies with the goal of finding better therapies for childhood cancer.

This individual will utilize bioinformatics and data science approach to analyze RNA-sequencing data, single cell spatial transcriptomic data, and CRISPR screening data using high performance computing cluster and data science packages.

This individual will be expected to be organized, understand data management, understand broad scientific concepts, write code, annotate and document their code, and generate figures and visualizations of large scale omic data. This person will be expected to accurately document their methods, analyze data, and assist in the preparation of results for publication in research journals as well as posters or presentations for conferences. The candidate will present in lab meetings and will engage in one-on-one meets with the PI on a regular basis to discuss research progress and professional development, including mentorship regarding graduate and/or medical school.

Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience: Strong preference for 2 year commitment.

Prefer proficiency in the following:

• Experience with high performance computing clusters

• Genomic and NGS data analysis including Unix/Linux, R, and Python

• RNA-sequencing pipelines: FastQC, STAR, SAMtools, DESeq2, limma, edgeR, GSEA analysis

• Single cell: Seurat, 10X genomics pipelines

• High throughput screening analysis: MAGeCK

• Data visualizations with ggplot, volcano plots, heatmaps, dot plots, and PCA

• Statistics: Generating statistics in R and Graphpad Prism

• Attention to detail and maintaining accurate records

• Github: Code documentation

• Ability to read and grasp scientific literature

• Curiosity and willingness to learn with excellent problem solving and decision-making skills

Education/Licensure/Certification: High School graduate or equivalent. Bachelors’ degree, in a related scientific field (e.g., mathematics, statistics, data science, computer science) preferred.

Pay Scale Information

$34,944.00-$56,212.00

Final determination of a successful candidate’s starting pay will vary based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to education and experience within the job or the industry. The pay scale listed for this position is generally for candidates that meet the specified qualifications and requirements listed on this specific job description. Additional pay may be determined for those candidates that exceed these specified qualifications and requirements.
