Netflix Media Systems Engineer L4 in Los Angeles, California

The Media Systems Engineering team is focused on the design, build, implementation, maintenance, and refresh of the image and sound technology systems present in all Netflix creative environments. This includes, but is not limited to, editorial stations, audio mix facilities, technical review environments, screening rooms (large), screening lounges (small), and public-facing exhibition environments such as the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and The Paris Theatre in Manhattan. Additionally, we collaborate with various internal cross-functional partners to develop & deploy innovative workflows for which the creative teams engage with. This can mean on-prem, collocated, or cloud infrastructure-based workflows. As Media Systems Engineer (L4) you will bring a broad set of technical skills and experience in image and sound technology integration and post-production workflows. You bring a development and automation-focused mindset to solving problems, and an impressive history of unique career and life experiences to add a diverse viewpoint to our team as we expand our creative infrastructure around the world.

In this role you will...

  • Work with team members and peers to design, deploy, and maintain the image and sound integrated systems and backbone technical infrastructure deployed in Netflix creative facilities globally

  • Partner with internal and external construction teams to define the necessary layout and infrastructure needs of our facilities based on your understanding of the creative workflows; ie Noise Criteria, high-level dimensions, material considerations based on the required color space, etc.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with business leaders, creative teams, and peer engineering groups to implement the infrastructure required to support our vision and strategy

  • Work with internal and external partners and vendors to help design and develop a roadmap for the evolution of our creative infrastructure strategy

  • Collaborate with members of the larger Studio & Corporate Infrastructure team to implement and support far-reaching strategic efforts, provide constructive feedback, and foster a collaborative environment

  • Actively engage with internal teams to help advance our ongoing effort for remote observability, support and deployment of distributed systems

About You

  • At least 5 years experience in systems engineering experience; demonstrable technical experience in systems design, product ownership, and iterative design and deployment

  • Strong knowledge (or even specialization) in the transmission, transport, and routing of audio and video signals and integration of these technologies including:

  • Baseband (HDMI, SDI, analog audio)

  • IP (AES67, Dante, NDI, and related networking standards)

  • DSP

  • Imaging and color science

  • High-performance computing and shared storage

  • Knowledge of AV control/automation systems; direct Q-SYS experience a plus

  • Knowledge and understanding of OSI network model and how to apply that to AV systems

  • Experience designing, building and supporting the following environments:

  • Theatrical exhibition — projection and emissive displays, Dolby Atmos, DCP servers

  • Post production — VFX, color grading, sound mixing, editorial, ADR, podcasting, QC, motion capture, dubbing

  • High-end home theater

  • Discerning eyes and ears to identify imperfections in compressed or miscalibrated A/V signals and environments

  • Able to self-organize, prioritize tasks, and clearly communicate key project deliverables with our partners around the globe; acts as an informed captain and make data-backed decisions on behalf of Netflix

  • Comfortable both giving and receiving feedback, you are curious and not afraid to ask questions and challenge the way things are done today; farm for dissent and seek alternative views to both problems and your solutions

  • Identify a problem or opportunity, take ownership, and act on it independently; develop methods and habits to be an informed and motivated product owner

  • Comfortable sharing your relevant industry knowledge and learned experiences with the team ongoing in a concise manner; MSE is constantly honing our skills as a group and identifying new ways to drive impact for the business

  • Know when to take ownership and when to escalate issues; our teams work to cover a global footprint and having self, situational, and organizational awareness to know when you should take the lead on an issue and when you should bring in reinforcements to help tackle the problem at hand is critical

  • Experienced in both interpreting and developing technical documentation, diagrams, templates while being proactive to maintain accuracy and relevancy of developed materials you have shared with the group or distributed to a project team

Additional Considerations

  • This role will include the responsibility of engineering escalations

  • In this role, you will travel approximately 20% of the time

  • Experience working in media and studio environments is necessary

    Generally, our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $100,000 - $720,000.

We also offer paid leave of absence programs. Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off to be used for vacation, holidays, and sick paid time off.
