Essential Job Functions

An IRRIGATION AND LAWN SPRINKLER FITTER is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions:

  • Completes the installation, alteration, and/or repair of various irrigation sprinkler systems (e.g., commercial irrigation systems, partial residential irrigation systems)by interpreting sprinkler system requirements; reviewing and interpreting applicable codes (e.g., building, residential, commercial, Universal Plumbing Code) and blueprints; using appropriate systems (e.g., Wi-fi, proprietary control software (i.e., irrigation timers)); responding to questions from stakeholders (e.g., homeowners, general public); ordering relevant materials and supplies; selecting appropriate solar systems; and selecting appropriate methods and processes for installation (e.g., line size, spacing, type of head) in order to ensure tasks are completed in a timely and efficient manner; and protect and prevent cross contamination of potable water systems.

  • Maintains irrigation sprinkler systems complete with low voltage (i.e., 24 volt) electric components (e.g., irrigation valves, master irrigation valves, solenoid valves) by using appropriate control systems (e.g., irrigation timers); checking for signs of leakage and accurate spray patterns; certifying that there are no obstructions of water flow to vegetation; repairing all parts of the system (e.g., mains, feeders, risers, all types of heads); servicing and repairing backflow devices; and replacing, as needed in order to ensure sprinkler systems are performing to full potential; and protect and prevent cross contamination of potable water systems.

  • Consults with supervisor or higher-level staff (e.g., Engineers) on highly complex irrigation and lawn sprinkler projects (e.g., median remodels, facility landscaping projects) by attending and/or conducting on-site job meetings to discuss project requirements; and reviewing documentation (e.g., irrigation blueprints, irrigation sizing charts, pressure and flow demand) in order to ensure the proper installation, alteration and/or repair of sprinkler systems.

  • Assists in trenching operations (e.g., new irrigation systems, repair of irrigation systems)by determining and marking trenches for new underground irrigation systems; driving to project sites; witnessing or performing pressure tests; and verifying pressure test results in order to ensure that trenches are excavated as required; and to ensure existing irrigation systems are not damaged.

Requirements

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

Training and Experience

Five years' experience in lawn and landscape sprinkler installation, alteration, and repair work, one year of which must have been at the *journey-level.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

*Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform a full-range of irrigation and lawn sprinkler fitter maintenance work independently, reliably, and safely.

PHYSICAL CLASS:

III - Moderate: Includes standing, or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

LICENSE:

A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

LICENSE INFORMATION: Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

Applicants must meet the Selection Requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the combined scores for Part I and II in order to be placed on the eligible list.

Benefit Information: Depending on the position, the successful candidate will enroll in a contributory defined benefit pension plan if the candidate is a “new member” of the County’s defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013 (first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012) – unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. It should be noted that County employees do not pay into Social Security, but do pay the Medical Hospital Insurance Tax portion of Social Security at a rate of 1.45%.
