As an Animal Care Attendant I you will, under close supervision, feed and care for animals and maintain sanitary conditions at Animal Care Centers.

DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL

The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control is one of the largest and most progressive animal control agencies in the United States. Our seven animal care centers serve over 3 million residents across 45 contract cities and unincorporated areas. We cover a diverse area of more than 3,400 square miles, providing 24/7 animal control and rescue services.

Essential Job Functions

  • Feeds and provides water to impounded animals; selects and prepares appropriate type and quantity of food.

  • Cleans, disinfects, and maintains sanitary conditions of kennels, cages, corrals, grounds, equipment, and facilities at an Animal Control Shelter.

  • Conducts routine maintenance and minor repairs of facilities and equipment at an Animal Control Shelter.

  • Assists higher-level personnel in releasing of animals to owners.

  • Bathes, grooms, and prepares animals available for placement.

  • Maintains simple records related to daily animal care and conditions by utilizing database software.

  • Assist higher-level personnel in preparing, restraining, medicating and vaccinating animals or in performing euthanasia as needed.

  • Transport animals to and from veterinary offices and other medical facilities, as needed.

  • Assist in the office by answering telephones, responding to inquiries from the public regarding care, retention, and disposal of animals; may collect fees and issue receipts as needed.

  • Pick up supplies needed at the Animal Control Shelter as needed.

Requirements

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

OPTION I:

Graduation from high school or its equivalent from an accredited institution* -AND- Six months of experience working with the general public or working with domestic animals in a veterinary hospital, clinical setting, or animal services facility.

OPTION II:

Certificate of completion as a participant within the Los Angeles County Greater Avenues for Independence (GAIN)/ General Relief Opportunities for Work (GROW) program -AND- Six months of experience working with domestic animals in a veterinary hospital, clinical setting, or animal services facility.

Note:Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part time ratio, such as 20 hours per week for two (2) months equals one (1) month of experience.

Out-of-class work experience in the service of the County of Los Angeles will not be accepted for this examination.

*Accreditation: Accredited institutions are those listed in the publications of regional, national or international accrediting agencies which are accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such a s American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. Also, acceptable if appropriate, are degrees that have been evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc.

Benefit Information: Depending on the position, the successful candidate will enroll in a contributory defined benefit pension plan if the candidate is a “new member” of the County’s defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013 (first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012) – unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. It should be noted that County employees do not pay into Social Security, but do pay the Medical Hospital Insurance Tax portion of Social Security at a rate of 1.45%. The Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA) has reciprocal agreements with several public retirement systems in California.
