What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 3 or R&D Engineer 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The W93 System Development and Realization Group (Q-20) is seeking a Research and Development Engineer 3/4 to lead and manage the W93 D5LE2 Compatibility team. You will work with the W93 Qualification, Test, and Evaluation (QTE) Director to build, develop, and manage the team responsible for planning, executing, and reporting on the component, sub-system, and system tests and analyses required to assess compatibility of the W93 on the D5LE2 missile.

This is an opportunity to be part of the first new weapon system program in over 30 years. Q-20, W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization Group, defines, develops, and fields the warhead system for the newest Navy sub-launched ballistic missile weapon program. We support the DoD/Navy SSP and DoE/NNSA customers in defining the mission need and corresponding technical and programmatic requirements. The W93 collaborates closely with Sandia National Laboratories and Lockheed Martin Space design agencies, developing the re-entry system, ensuring safe, secure, & reliable warhead performance and a relevant nuclear deterrent. Q-20 also incorporates the production agency teams (KCNSC, Pantex, SRS, Y-12, LANL, and SNL) tightly into the design, qualification, and realization processes.

The W93 D5LE2 Lead will work with the Q-20 QTE and requirements teams to evaluate which requirements are needed to be verified between the D5LE and D5LE2 programs. They will be responsible for coordinating the test and analysis requirements as well as designing and fielding the appropriate test hardware required to evaluate these requirements. They will interface with NNSA and US Navy customers, Sandia National Laboratories, and Lockheed Martin Space to maintain program alignment among all stakeholders.

W93 D5LE2 Compatibility Lead (R&D Engineer 3) $122,300-$206,300

• Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, testing, analyzing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.

• Engineering Design: Thorough knowledge and experience in the design basis qualification process and test and analysis engineering of a nuclear weapon system, subsystem, or components with data needs and components from multiple stakeholders

• Program/Project Management: Demonstrated use of project management principles and tools to deliver products on schedule, while engaging multiple projects with differing priorities

• Networking: Demonstrated experience in interacting and integrating effectively with external and internal interfaces (to include DoD, NNSA, and other agencies); building trust, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts while nurturing relationships

W93 D5LE2 Compatibility Lead (R&D Engineer 4) $146,800-$254,700

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requ i res:

• Collaboration: Demonstrated record of developing and leading successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems.

• Engineering Design: Advanced knowledge and experience in developing test and analysis portfolios to cover multiple environmental and functional requirements on an integrated system.

Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with US Navy nuclear weapon system design and engineering

• Knowledgeable of requirement derivation, traceability, and verification

• Experience with nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, or surveillance (The Weapon Acquisition Lifecycle (Phase 6.X or X process))

• Seasoned experience interacting with and presenting to senior-level management and customers

• Experience in program or project management of technical or operational work, including defining work scope, schedules, budgets, priorities, and performance milestones; developing cost, scope, and schedule baselines; and managing risk

• Mechanical or Systems Engineering degree

• Active Q Clearance, equivalent DoD clearance, or the ability to obtain an Active Q Clearance

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: This position will be required to work onsite and will have access to the 5/40 or 9/80 schedules.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
