Reviews patient history and physician's orders. Educates patient regarding procedures, equipment, and exam to ensure patients' understanding and cooperation.

Selects transducer and makes equipment adjustments according to nature of test, depth of field, and other specifications of test.

Checks the physician's requisition for complete information on the procedure requested; refers any questions to the ultrasound physician before performing the procedure.

Implements safety standards and performs appropriate quality control procedures on equipment. Troubleshoots, resolves, and/or reports equipment malfunctions as necessary.

Recognizes the significance of all structures that are visualized on the monitor and be able to differentiate artifacts from anatomic/pathologic structures within equipment limitations.

Minimum education:

Graduate of an approved program of Ultrasound/Sonography, or equivalent.

Required Skills:

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able tro work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Certifications:

Basic Life Support (BLS) current upon hire.

New hires will have ninety (90) days from date of hire to obtain American Heart Association certifications. Notwithstanding this 'grace period' for obtaining American Heart Association certifications, employees are not excused from being current in any and all existing certifications that are required for their position as outlined in the position job description.

Licenses:

Current ARDMS registry (RVT), ARRT (VS), or CCI (RVS) upon hire

and

NM Medical Imaging License to practice as a Sonographer.
