Los Alamos National Laboratory Steam/Power System Engineering Technologist in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Labortory (LANL) is seeking an experienced Steam/Power System Engineering Technologist to join our Engineering Services - Utilities and Infrastructure (ES-UI) team and directly support our National Security Mission. In this challenging and rewarding role you will be responsible for facility engineering, operations, construction, preventative and corrective maintenance, and compliance for LANL's steam and power generation and distribution assets. LANL Utilities and Infrastructure (UI) owns and operates several large steam boilers and a 20+MW combustion gas turbine generator to distribute steam and power throughout the LANL campus. Here you will provide subject matter expertise on steam and power generation, steam distribution, and condensate return systems to ensure safety, quality, and reliability. You will participate as an integrated project team member to ensure that projects are designed and completed to acceptable standards for these systems. You will contribute to the annual Utility Health Report of all related assets and help develop and refine scope and justification for future project funding consideration, as well as develop the scope and prepare estimates for new projects and modifications.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position which include but are not necessarily limited to:

Communication

  • Serve as a primary technical point of contact for all aspects of assigned steam and power systems.

  • Respond to and resolve operation and maintenance issues with engineering solutions that meet applicable codes and standards. Ensure expectations are established and met. Ensure maintenance instructions/checklists are currently in the preventive maintenance program. Frequently conduct in-field observations of maintenance work.

  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of project deliverables.

Documentation

  • Prepares documents, studies, calculations, and reports associated with the steam and power systems.

  • Establish and maintain technical baseline documentation requirements to ensure the safe and reliable operations, maintenance and construction for the steam and power systems.

  • Create drawings and specifications for various projects including facility and supporting equipment upgrades.

  • Review and comment on engineering designs/studies/assessments by LANL Engineering Project Delivery and external AE firms. Ensure that all comments are adequately addressed to ensure reliable and safe LANL Infrastructure Systems.

Implementation

  • Apply industry recognized codes and standards, and applicable LANL engineering standards to steam production, transmission, distribution & condensate return and power generation assets.

  • Review and approve vendor submittals and design modifications as required for project completion and other duties as assigned.

  • Individually or with a team, perform field work (i.e.; site visits, construction site walkdowns, construction inspection assistance, for example), as needed.

  • Implement applicable Pressure Safety ASME requirements in design, maintenance, operation, installation, and testing of pressure systems.

  • Support the associated safety analyses, hazard evaluations, and lessons learned exercises.

  • Perform disturbance and abnormal event investigations on utility system upon request from Operations and Maintenance.

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or Engineering Technologist 3 level depending on experience and skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Technologist 2 ($92,300 - $121,700)

  • Experience working in an engineering role in operating and maintaining utility-class steam and/or power generation and distribution systems.

  • Experience evaluating, installing, implementing, operating and programming instrumentation and controls for fluid process similar to steam and/or power systems.

  • Experience working with SCADA, RTUs, or other OT hardware and technology.

  • Demonstrated design experience with described systems.

  • Experience in a system engineer role helping to develop a preventative maintenance program.

  • Experience providing long-term operational planning and strategic planning for utility reinvestment and asset management.

  • Experience developing and managing complex projects.

  • Experience developing and managing project schedules and resources allocation.

  • Knowledge of NFPA, EPA and related Standards, Requirements, and compliance audits.

Engineering Technologist 3 ($101,700 - $135,000)

In addition to the job requirements for Engineer 2, Engineer 3 requirements include:

  • Advanced knowledge in engineering concepts to support of utility system operations.

  • Experience in leading development of condition assessments of assigned systems.

  • Strong experience to verify and approve technical designs and any changes to system configuration.

  • Success in leading the development of process improvement and instrumentation control.

Education/Experience for Engineering Technologist 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.

Education/Experience for Engineering Technologist 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to design implementation

  • Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.

  • EIT or Professional Engineering certification.

  • Working knowledge of utility generation and distribution systems including steam, condensate return, and turbine generators.

  • Working knowledge of utility-class steam systems, ASME, NFPA and related codes compliance.

  • Working knowledge of rotating equipment.

  • Working knowledge of water treatment systems.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
