Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Technologist 1 or 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Under the guidance of a senior technologist or engineer/scientist, Research Technologists perform technical work requiring advanced knowledge in the area of science or engineering. Focused assignments are usually portions of the total design or research project and require technical depth and understanding. Research Technologists contribute to the development, implementation, and completion of project objectives. As part of a research team you will communicate results through internal reports, progress reports to sponsors, or technical publications. Research Technologists may have responsibility for safety/security envelope for projects, the team, or the group. Work will include systems which may have hazards involving high consequences for safety such as, high energy capacitor banks, X-ray systems, and radiological containment. Work will be related to national security objectives, requiring the individual to hold a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP).

Research Technologist 1 ($83,900- $136,600)

  • Contribute to the development of specifications for project implementation and verifying that the end product meets expectations and requirements.

  • Works under collaborative direction and guidance toward predetermined goals and objectives.

  • Develops specifications for product/system/equipment design and/or production processes in support of research.

  • Process and equipment evaluations including market research and exploration of novel technologies.

  • May act as lead and review activities of other employees on specific tasks that contribute to the larger project.

  • Collaborate with Process Engineers to implement process health management principles (i.e. preventive maintenance, obsolescence planning, spare parts inventory).

  • Actively engage with the operations team to complete routine and non-routine tasks.

  • Generate training material and conducts on-the-job training.

Research Technologist 2 ($92,300-$151,000)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower Technologist 1 level:

  • Develop and implement proof of concepts for new equipment and technologies.

  • Develops, plans, and executes test plans for new equipment installations.

  • Become Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and Mechanical Processing equipment subject matter expert to maintain and upgrade components if the technology is outdated.

  • Develop specifications for project implementation overseeing work of students and non-expert staff and verifying that the product meets expectations and requirements.

  • Prepare research documentation and provide peer-review of documentation from other members of the team.

  • Gather, trend, and present data to influence project/process direction.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge in NDE and mechanical processing acquired by experience, certification and/or formal education.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of scientific principles, experimental processes, computations, and data gathering methods.

  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) complex codes, standards and criteria pertinent to NDE and mechanical processing.

  • At this level, the successful candidate will demonstrate record of leading the design, development, testing and installation of equipment.

  • Demonstrate technical leadership in developing advanced concepts in their area of expertise.

  • Demonstrate supervision of projects and personnel as part of a larger project or program.

Education/Experience at the lower level: Requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at the lower level: Requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a High School Diploma.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Lifting potentially 50 lbs with assistance. Respirator work. Working with equipment. Potential hazardous chemicals.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
