Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

LANL is tasked with qualifying and certifying the efficacy of the systems and subsystems we design and maintain through testing. The nature of the testing spans a wide range of engineering disciplines to include explosives testing, stockpile-to-target-sequence environments testing, electrical testing, and flight testing. The Test Engineering Group (E-14) of the Engineering, Technology and Design Division (E) is responsible for weapons component, sub-assembly, and full system level tests in environments associated with weapon lifetimes, including but not limited to storage, transportation, delivery, hostile, and abnormal environments.

E-14 is seeking a highly-organized, self-motivated, technical leader with a strong desire to build and evolve experimental engineering capabilities to join our team as a Senior Test Engineer for the Flight Properties team.  The Flight Properties Team is focused on testing in environments associated with the nuclear stockpile's reentry systems designed by both LANL and LLNL. The flight properties team operates LANL's blast tube facility, centrifuge facility, and a host of mass properties diagnostic equipment. The successful candidate will be responsible for the oversight and coordination of: project initiation with customers and key stakeholders, experimental design and planning, hardware design and analysis, test execution using the facilities and capabilities described above, collaboration with program management, mentorship of newer staff, and contributions to staffing and strategic direction of the Flight Properties Team.

R&D Engineer 3 ($122,300-$206,300)

At the R&D Engineer 3 level, the successful candidate will be responsible for the development, sustainment and execution of experimental capabilities on the Flight Properties team in E-14. The selected candidate will ensure required capabilities, equipment and facilities are prepared to meet current and future program deliverables and schedule.

R&D Engineer 4 ($146,800-$254,700)

In addition to what is described at the R&D Engineer 3 level, at the R&D Engineer 4 level you will be expected to lead collaborative teams in complex technical work; define and execute project plans in coordination with customers, line management and other stakeholders; serve as an SME and technical resource, providing oversight the Flight Properties Team in E-14.

  • Proven ability to develop and apply advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems.

Collaboration and Teamwork

  • A strong track record of developing high-performing teams, including the mentoring of junior staff and students through demonstrated contributions to large-scale projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective, intellectually diverse teams, and interact with colleagues with diverse professional, educational, and experience backgrounds.

Communication

  • Exceptional written, oral, and presentation skills including use of soft skills and a persistence to navigate the institutional systems and processes to meet goals in a timely manner.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requ i res:

Technical Leadership

  • Demonstrated experience leading multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing large-scale stockpile programs.

Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Significant experience mentoring students and developing lasting, collaborative relationships with academia.

  • Participation in relevant professional societies (American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society of Experimental Mechanics, etc.) or NNSA complex interactions and collaborations, preferably as an active contributor.

  • Experience providing peer-review of internally and externally published technical documents

  • Familiarity working in and around hazardous operations (explosives, radiation generating devices, high voltage electrical, etc.).

  • Experience handling and working in the vicinity of classified information.

  • Active DOE Q clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
