What You Will Do
Weapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q Division) provides systems engineering and program management to develop and field qualified engineering solutions to improve the safety, reliability, and security of our Nation's nuclear stockpile throughout the weapon life cycle. Q Division is responsible for leadership of activities in new LANL weapons programs as well as life extension and alteration projects.
The Advanced System Development Group (Q-18) is responsible for Systems and Design Engineering of Future Weapons Systems up to phase 3/6.3 (NNSA SD 452.3-2A) with emphasis on improved performance, safety, producibility, and agility of the future stockpile, Interagency Peer Reviews (IPRs) of LLNL Systems, and Future System and System Agnostic Design and System Engineering support to a wide range of experiments from internally fielded technology tests to hydrodynamic and subcritical experiments to system flight tests.
As a Research & Development (R&D) Engineer 3 on the Integrated Ground Testing Team in Q-18, you'll contribute to weapons systems design & development through collaboration with colleagues and interfaces with internal & external customers. Integrated Ground Testing Team engineers are charged with the creation of functional prototype hardware assemblies from conceptual design through assembly and testing. Other topics and tasks for our R&D Engineers include a wide range of mechanical and systems engineering challenges such as requirements development & management, concept modeling & analysis, component design & development, and testing & validation for individual components up to full systems. Other duties include the generation & release of planning documents, reports, and presentations as required to support customer deliverables; and participation in programmatic and technical reviews including the briefing of upper lab management and external customers on complex or high visibility projects; and mentorship of junior staff & students.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Communication: Ability to present & explain technical information (verbally, in written form, and with visual aids) to an audience with varied technical and non-technical and varying levels of Subject Matter Experts (SME's). Demonstrated experience supporting customers and colleagues in a collaborative environment. Shows initiative to identify and derive customer needs. Ability to manage multiple tasks in an environment of shifting priorities. Experience in mentoring of peers or juniors, broadly or as related to a specific skill.
Technical Leadership: Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated expertise in mechanical design, electrical design, nuclear engineer, product engineering, process engineering, or in a closely related similar discipline. Engineering experience on complex designs, high-risk projects, new technology development, or similar. Demonstrated ability to lead peers and experienced subject matter experts as part of a dynamic, effective team. Ability to assess technical challenges & needs and make recommendation for solutions. Proven capability to work (with minimal supervision) towards project goals and deliverables, possibly for multiple simultaneous programs with competing priority.
Education/Experience: Position requires a master's degree in engineering and 6 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Although not required, any number or combination of the following skills may make an applicant for this position more appealing to the hiring committee:
Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience with nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, or surveillance
Experience working with the LANL Weapons Engineering and Weapons Physics organizations
Advanced knowledge of nuclear weapons, NNSA facilities, or DoD customers that support the U.S. stockpile
Program management-Status track while collaborating with other teams. Budgeting, schedule, and scope.
Formal systems engineering training, certification, or education (e.g., INCOSE ASEP)
Leading formal reviews such as design reviews.
Experience with tooling design.
Formal model-based system engineering (MBSE) training or certification (e.g., OCSMP, Cameo)
Advanced experience with requirements development and maintenance
Advanced knowledge of or experience with hydrodynamic testing.
Advanced knowledge of or experience with electrical system development & testing.
Advanced knowledge of or experience with Design for Manufacturing Principles.
Experience with performing safety structural analysis.
Experience as a Derivative Classifier (DC).
Experience working with or around high explosives.
Active DOE Q clearance
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
