Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Electrical Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Technology Applications Group (A-3) is seeking an Electrical Engineer to work on our nation's most pressing national security challenges. A-3 is home to a broad range of engineering and scientific expertise dedicated

to delivering functional solutions for users across the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and Intelligence Community. A-3's core competencies include radio frequency design and analysis, custom electronic

solutions, mechanical design and evaluation, power infrastructure and systems, and electromagnetics.

A-3 currently has two Electrical Engineer openings for individuals interested in working in a multidisciplinary group consisting of engineers, scientists, technicians, and technologists working to transform concepts and

designs into deployable products to meet Global Security mission deliverables. The desired candidate's primary functions will be utilization of core engineering principles to design, construct, prototype, test and

analyze electrical systems. The successful candidate will work both independently and as part of a team typically operating on short operational timescales. Most project work is conducted at the Q and SCI levels.

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

R&D Engineer 2 ($99,200 - $164,100)

To support the mission outlined above, the R&D Engineer 2 will be required to:

  • Function in a mostly autonomous fashion.

  • Contribute to the development, design, testing, fabrication, and execution of R&D projects including schedule development, cost estimates, and project status reports.

  • Collaborate with team members on designs with internal and external colleagues at the project, team, and group level.

R&D Engineer 3 ($119,200 - $201,100)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 3 will be required to:

  • Lead collaboration on designs with internal and external colleagues at the project, team, and group level.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to team members.

  • Lead the development, design, testing, fabrication, and execution of R&D projects including schedule development, cost estimates, and project status reports.

R&D Engineer 2

The successful candidate will be required to collaborate and apply technical skills within a multidisciplinary operational environment.

Research & Collaboration

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct basic engineering research, both independently and on teams.

  • Ability and desire to learn new skills and become an expert in new areas of interest.

Technical Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following subjects:

  • Electronic systems, including analog or digital circuit design, schematic capture and layout for printed circuit board (PCB) development, and experience with circuit simulation tools.

  • Embedded systems design, integration, and firmware development.

  • Signal processing, including time and frequency domain analysis, filter design, and development of sampling strategies.

  • RF and microwave systems design and analysis, including transmitter and receiver development, antenna selection, and RF PCB development.

  • Electromagnetics theory and effects.

  • Experience with making measurements in at least one of the following fields: mechanical,electromagnetic, radiographic, and/or optical.

  • Demonstrated success designing, constructing and troubleshooting hardware systems.

  • Strong organizational skills.

R&D Engineer 3

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:

The successful candidate will be required to lead, collaborate, and apply technical skills within a multidisciplinary operational environment

Research & Collaboration

  • Demonstrated ability to lead components of advanced engineering research, both independently and on teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify and develop new skills and become an expert in new areas of interest.

  • In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires technical expertise in one or more of the bulleted topic areas.

Technical Expertise

  • Extensive experience with design and analysis in one or more of the above bulleted subject areas.

  • Expertise in modeling and simulation in one or more of the above topic areas.

  • Demonstrated experience formulating work plans, identifying project resources, and executing R&D projects.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education

and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education

and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

In addition to the minimum job requirements, candidates with expanded qualifications in any of the following areas are viewed favorably.

  • Proven leadership of a large multi-organizational program or project.

  • Operational experience in any of the following topics:

  • Bare metal programming for microcontrollers.

  • Software-defined radio.

  • Antenna design, especially miniaturized antenna structures and PCB antennas.

  • Applied electromagnetics, especially in pulsed power and high-power magnetics.

  • Electromagnetics modeling and simulation in COMSOL, REMCOM, or similar.

  • Field-programmable gate array (FPGA) devices, including experience with hardware description languages (Verilog, VHDL, or similar).

  • Electromechanical systems integration.

  • Reverse engineering of electronic systems and/or firmware.

  • Software engineering.

  • Experience with experimental data collection and analysis, including the use of common instrument control and data collection software packages such as LabVIEW and/or MATLAB.

  • Expertise in signal processing, data acquisition technologies, and statistical detection theory.

  • Demonstrated programming experience with Python, MATLAB, C, or C++.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of applied technology development and testing.

  • Advanced degree in engineering or a related STEM field.

  • Active Q/SCI clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
