Los Alamos National Laboratory Project Engineer 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO) as a Project Engineer. As a vital member of the ES-DO team you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, and will support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory. Note: This position will be filled at either the Engineer 1 or Engineer 2 level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level
Project Engineer 1 ($92,300 - $151,000)
As a Project Engineer at LANL, you will contribute to national security by assisting in technical engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and closeout of projects. You will be responsible for identifying and/or leading activities and managing the development of projects with an integrated project team (IPT) that includes both customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts and others. With this opportunity you will learn about project engineering from seasoned engineers while developing your engineering judgement and leadership skills.
Project Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)
In addition to what was outlined for the Project Engineer 1, the Project Engineer 2 performs the following duties:
Act as the lead technical representative for engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and closeout of projects
Manage scoping and design phases
Participate in planning, forecasting, and identifying necessary engineering resources to support project workload requirements
Review project engineering progress against approved schedules and budgets; evaluating changes; and taking corrective action when required
Work with the LANL Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) representatives such as building official, fire marshal, electrical safety officer, etc. for identification of requirements, permitting, and issues resolution
Application of Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS), performance reporting, and variance analysis
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
2 years' experience and fundamental knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems
Demonstrated familiarity with engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies
Demonstrated ability to articulate concepts through various oral and written communication media, using a diverse range of technical and business acumen
Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking in complex problem solving, present options, and make recommendations.
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and contract language
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), and Adobe Acrobat
Additional Job Requirements for Project Engineer 2:
3 years of relevant job experience
Demonstrated sound knowledge of project engineering processes and procedures consistent with the duties described above
2 to 3 years of experience with engineering work planning, scheduling, and cost estimating
Experience conducting independent work requiring judgment in the application of engineering techniques
Working knowledge of infrastructure or utility design, codes and standards
Experience with projects in scoping, design, construction, change management, and engagement with field personnel, or a combination of these
Education/Experience at Engineer 1:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience.
Education/Experience at Engineer 2:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Desired Qualifications:
Engineer in Training Certificate.
Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes.
Knowledge of DOE O 413.B-Program and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals, policies, procedures, and standards using tools such as MS Project or Oracle P6.
Experience in DOE/NNSA nonreactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities or projects
Advanced degree in relevant field.
Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
