What You Will Do

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is primarily responsible for monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting advanced research in numerous areas related to national security. Additionally, it is a center for research in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including space exploration, geophysics, renewable energy, supercomputing, medicine, and nanotechnology.

Detonator Production (DP) is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce WR (War Reserve) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate, and is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precise, safe, and reliable WR products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management organizations to deliver on challenging national security objectives. DP upholds vigorous principles including teamwork, personal integrity, continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety, security, and building a respectful workplace.

This position is based in the Detonator Production DP-5 Production Integration Operations Support Group, specifically with the Work Order team. The selected candidate will assist DP-5 with the implementation and support of the Production Planning and Control (PPC) Framework. The planning and work control team manages all detonator production work planning, scheduling, and manufacturing workflow throughout the production agency (PA) manufacturing workflow through the production Agency (PA) manufacturing life cycle at Technical Area (TA) 22, including manufacturing War Reserve (WR) High- Explosive (HE) detonator products. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting up work orders and providing status to master work schedule and resource and capacity planning for forecasted work.

The PPC functions that this candidate will be responsible for require technical understanding of manufacturing systems, processes, and tools at TA-22, such as the DP Secure Operations Management System (SOMS) and Manufacturing Execution System (MES).

This position will be filled at the Production Control and Analysis Level 1 or 2, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Job Duties:

Production Control and Analysis 1 ($57,800 - $89,500)

• Input and maintain quality data requirements in the SOMS system.

• Coordinate work order changes with Technical Project Managers (TPMs), Engineers, and Technicians. Research, assemble, evaluate request, and apply regulatory changes affecting the production agency manufacturing processes or programs, and recommend sound, practical solutions to complex issues.

• Create work order in SOMS, plan the work order, schedule the work, and close-out the work order.

• Adhere to the work order requirements, follow the manufacturing procedures and practices.

• Apply standard production and/or inventory control principles, theories, and concepts.

• Analyze work order request, determine level of detail and data required build a comprehensive and complete work order with sound instructions.

• Utilize production, inventory control, and procurement technology tools to resolve issues.

• Run reports in SOMS database to analyze production and provide guidance to resolve manufacturing issues.

• Understand and adhere to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to nuclear materials management.

Production Control and Analysis 2 ($69,500 - $110,300)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the candidate will be expected to:

• Execute authorized demand for products across product families and within production line and according to a master production schedule to meet programmatic productive demand.

• Performs manufacturing resource planning processes according to authorized boundary conditions.

• Performs production floor scheduling and status management processes including inventory control and management.

• With functional and operational direction, performs Designated Procurement Representative functions in support of maintaining manufacturing inventory levels and nuclear facility-related equipment and spare levels.

• Works with operational manufacturing and quality personnel to integrate real-time scheduling issues and manage of work control and release for product families or production lines.

• Transforms master production schedules into established inventory levels and work-in-process to control short-range manufacturing schedules.

Job Requirements for Production Control and Analysis 1:

• Knowledge of work processes in a manufacturing work environment, utilizing a resource planning system.

• Experience being successful working independently as well as in a team environment; one of which is customer focused.

• Experience adhering to and enforcing manufacturing process and procedures

• Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and follow-through to complete multiple tasks, often under strict deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities.

• Knowledge and/or experience being part of continuous improvement activities using Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma, and other Continuous Improvement (CI) methodologies/tools.

Additional Job Requirements for Production Control and Analysis 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, the Production Control and Analysis 2 requires expert-level knowledge, skills, and abilities such as:

• Advance knowledge of production work planning and control methods

• Advanced knowledge of resource planning and optimization practices

• Advanced knowledge and/or experience with manufacturing concepts and systems such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Materials Requirements Planning (MRP), and Manufacturing Execution System (MES).

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires 2 years of experience.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

• Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.

• Experience with manufacturing process step definition and traveler development.

• Demonstrated experience achieving required objectives in a production environment.

• Demonstrated experience applying continuous improvement concepts.

• Demonstrated knowledge of conduct of operations principles.

• Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or similar).

Direction

A. Supervision Received

• Receives supervision and technical guidance from a senior/staff production control and/or group management. Work is evaluated on completion to ensure objectives have been met.

B. Supervision Exercised

• Project Controls Specialist 1: None.

• Project Controls Specialist 2: May direct the work of technician staff.

C. Contacts

• Regular contact with group management and general staff.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
