Los Alamos National Laboratory Metalforming Research Technician 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Deformation Processing Team in the Fabrication Manufacturing Science Group (Sigma-1) is seeking a research technician to assist in various metals manufacturing projects. Our Team specializes in metals forming and heat treating using rolling mills, hydraulic presses, and heat-treating furnaces. We support a wide variety of programs with an emphasis on identifying creative solutions to meet our customer's needs.

This is an entry level position and no direct metal forming experience is required, we are looking for individuals with a willingness to learn and a positive attitude. The role will include hands-on work including deep drawing, forging, rolling, wire drawing & swaging, and heat treating of metals and alloys. Previous experience in one of the above areas is desired but not required. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively on both independent projects and as part of a team. Common tasks for this job include:

  • Assisting in the setup and operation of metals forming machines

  • Assistant for vacuum heat treatment furnace operations

  • Taking notes while you work and record equipment parameters, experimental data, and unusual conditions

  • Routine housekeeping and shop support, including maintaining supplies for the equipment in these areas

  • Hands-on work in a radiological controlled area and with classified parts

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Hands-on experience in an industrial or research environment

  • Experience working from written instructions or drawings to work both safely and meet project goals

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, working from written instructions and recording work in official records or work reports

  • Demonstrated self-starter with a commitment to organization and task preparation

  • Ability to obtain a "Q" clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.

Education/Experience: Position requires a High School diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with hands-on fabrication tasks such as metal forming, machining, or building assemblies for experiments.

  • Experience selecting and assembling mechanical hardware.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and careful work practices around industrial hazards.

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
