Los Alamos National Laboratory IT Project Manager 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This posting is for an IT Project Manager 2 in the Information Technology Project Management (ITPM) Group in the Project Strategy and Execution Division (PSE), which is part of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Business Management (ALDBUS). The PSE-ITPM group provides IT project and program management, including Agile framework support to ensure IT projects achieve success and deliver expected outcomes within scope, schedule, and budget. The PSE-ITPM Group implements project management tools and systems to improve strategic planning, execution, monitoring, and closeout of projects.

This position will serve as a Project Manager for one or more software application development and policy optimization projects. We're looking for someone with skills and knowledge in Project Management frameworks.

Responsibilities

The project manager manages and ensures the timely completion of multi-discipline IT projects of low to moderate levels of complexity and scope, provides leadership throughout the entire project lifecycle using various project management methodologies and tools to achieve project objectives and outcomes and oversees the project team in the planning, tracking, and execution of the project from initiation to completion; and facilitates transfer of operations and maintenance activities. This position will be deployed to an internal Laboratory customer and their responsibility ranges from software development, infrastructure, tool selection, subcontracting and usage, and project implementation. They provide leadership for the project team and work closely with Information & Technology (I&T) staff regarding delivery of specific products and projects. Project managers work under limited direction, coordinate activities of other personnel and are granted latitude in determining the methods and procedures needed for new assignments.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of a policy management program and other team-focused managerial methods that seek to improve performance systematically and effectively.

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, problem-solving and conflict-resolution ability, and outstanding organizational skills.

  • Working knowledge of IT environments and software development methodologies, tools and processes.

  • Experienced ability to partner with customers and solve problems while defining expectations and mutual responsibilities.

  • Experienced ability to translate project management terms to layperson's terms and present them to audiences in and outside of I&T.

Education/Experience

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field from an accredited institution and 4 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience leading various development teams in a variety of different contexts (different team sizes, different organizations, different cultures, co-located vs. distributed, etc.)

  • Experience in technical writing, editing, and preparing and presenting reports and skills in giving formal and impromptu presentations.

  • Scrum Master Certification (CSM), SAFe, PMP, or equivalent.

  • Experience working in a hybrid methodology across different teams (Agile and waterfall combined)

  • Ability to obtain a DOE "Q" security clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos,NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
